Dinos extend win streak to five, beat ‘Horns

| By:
BOX SCORE LETHBRIDGE – A four-goal lead through 40 minutes was enough for the No. 4 University of Calgary Dinos to notch their fifth-straight win to begin the year 4-1 against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night at the Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Despite taking the foot off the gas pedal in the final period, the Dinos managed to improve to 5-0-0 as they handed the Pronghorns their third loss of the year. Calgary did all their scoring in the first half of the game before back-up netminder Dylan Tait came in and denied all 13 shots he faced.

These two teams meet-up again tomorrow night at the Father David Bauer Arena, wrapping up the weekend with a 6 p.m. puck drop.

Playing a Lethbridge team seeking their first win of the year, Calgary pounced early in the first to make it 1-0 at the 2:17 mark. After the puck was carried out from behind the goal, a scrum ensued in front of the Pronghorn net. A number of players had a chance to put the puck in, but it was rookie sensation Chris Collins who capitalized for his sixth goal in five games.

While on the power play at 5:39, the Dinos extended their lead to 2-0. Off a point-shot by Davis Vandane, Walker Wintoneak picked up a rebound and put it past Lethbridge Hurricanes' product Damien Ketlo for his first of the year.

The game could've gotten out of hand in the first period if it wasn't for solid goaltending by Ketlo. With the 'Horns going shorthanded four-times in the opening 20 minutes, the second-year backstop was forced to make 19 saves compared to five by Calgary's Kris Lazaruk.

Collins continued to impress in the second period. The former Okotoks Oiler scored his second of the game and fifth in two contests, unassisted, at 5:15 of the middle frame.

First-year forward Adam Kambeitz redirected in Calgary's fourth goal of the game off an initial shot by Drydn Dow. Kambeitz's second of the season brought about a goaltending change for Lethbridge as Tait came in to relieve Ketlo, who surrendered four goals on 25 shots.

The Pronghorns got their first goal of the game in the first minute of third period. Firing a shot from the top of the left face-off circle, David McMullen beat Lazaruk on the blocker side for his first of the campaign.

As Calgary's legs slowed down in the third, Lethbridge applied their best pressure of the game. Lazaruk made 11 saves in the period, finishing the night with 25 as he shut the door the rest of the way.

Calgary outshot Lethbridge 38-26. The Dinos were 1-6 on the power play, while the Pronghorns went 0-5.

Next weekend, Calgary will travel east and play two games at the newly re-named Wayne Fleming Arena versus the Manitoba Bisons on Oct. 25-26.

The Pronghorns will be in Saskatoon on Oct. 25-26 as they take on the Saskatchewan Huskies in a two-game set.
