The UBC Thunderbirds scored three unanswered goals in the second half to remain undefeated on the season, defeating the University of Calgary Dinos 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Calgary's West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
Trailing by one at the half, UBC held territorial advantage for the bulk of the second quarter and was rewarded with a trio of tallies on the 50th, 61st, and 74th minutes as they improved their record to 7-0-3 on the campaign. Calgary emerges from a tough weekend at 5-4-2 after dropping a toss-up contest to Trinity Western Saturday.
"I thought in the first half that we competed, even though UBC came out with some physicality and dominated possession," said Calgary head coach
Troye Flannery. "We were rewarded with a great goal, but unfortunately we became content. UBC sets the standard in this country, in my opinion, based on what I saw today, and they're tough to break down. You can't become content – so lesson learned."
The Dinos' goal was a beauty, and was just the second goal given up by the Thunderbirds in the 10 games they've played this year. Just over 23 minutes into the contest,
Tessa Miller fed a nice pass across to
Nikki Furukawa just outside the penalty area. With her back turned to the goal, Furukawa accepted the pass, dribbled, spun, and fired in one motion, curving a beautiful ball into the top left corner of the net from 25 yards out – leaving no chance for Thunderbirds 'keeper Alyssa Williamson.
It was the only shot on goal for the Dinos in the opening half and, despite being outshot 6-2 in the first 45, Calgary took its 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half was all UBC as they peppered the Calgary net with 10 shots sent toward Dinos goalkeeper
Samantha Chang-Foidl. Three of those made it into the cage, beginning with a perfect tally by Jasmin Dhanda from just outside the area that snuck in under the crossbar on the 50th minute. Just over 10 minutes later, Shayla Chorney converted a corner kick by Taylor Shannik with a one-touch goal, and Rachael Sawer rounded out the scoring for UBC with another one-touch tally off a wide cross by Chorney.
Despite the losses on the weekend, Flannery was upbeat about his team's effort against two of the top teams in the nation.
"Trinity Western and UBC, as I said, set the standard in the country," he said. "We've made massive strides to come back and compete – these games were far more lopsided last year – and we're going in the right direction. We're still awfully young, and the devil is in the details – we didn't take care of details yesterday and gave up a set-piece goal, and gave up another one today. Those are details we have to get sorted.
"We're dangerous going forward, but we switch off now and again and you can't do that against the premiere programs in this conference."
With a playoff spot already secure, Calgary wraps up the regular season next weekend with a single home match against the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Kickoff goes at 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch. UBC returns home and will host Mount Royal and Alberta next weekend to wrap up its season.
