Oppenheim's dramatic winner vaults Dinos over T-Wolves

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – Sophomore midfielder Kieran Lane-Oppenheim put home the winner in injury time as the University of Calgary Dinos improved to 6-4-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves Sunday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.

Demonstrating a flair for the dramatic, Oppenheim completed a nifty play after passes from Izak Lawrence and Dominic Russo to put home the winner from the left side of the cage as the Dinos completed a second-half comeback and significantly improved their chances to qualify for the playoffs with the win. The loss drops UNBC to 2-6-2 in the Timberwolves' sophomore CIS season.

Oppenheim, the Dinos' MVP, was all over the pitch for Calgary in the game, setting up Jaron Broom's game-tying goal just minutes into the second half before scoring the late game-winner. He finished the day with seven shots total shots, pacing the Dinos offence all the way.

"We left it late, but I think we generated enough opportunities that we deserved to win that game," said Calgary head coach Brian McDonnell. "I can't say enough about Kieran Oppenheim – he did a great job of pushing their fullbacks, getting in behind them, and getting to dangerous areas. Getting all three points is big, especially considering how close we are to a playoff spot, and full credit to them – they got a big win yesterday and didn't look any the worse for wear for it."

UNBC got on the board first late in the opening half off the rush. On the 37th minute, Tofa Fakunle brought the ball up the field, sped around a Calgary defender, and fired a shot on Dinos netminder Jordan Unreiner. The Calgary 'keeper made the stop, but Jake Vickers was right there to pounce on the rebound and put it away as the Timberwolves took a 1-0 lead into half time.

After the break, the Dinos pressed and were immediately rewarded. Again the goal came from a rebound as Oppenheim's shot was stopped but not covered by UNBC goalkeeper Mitch MacFarlane. The ball bounced right to Jaron Broom, who tucked it just inside the right post to knot it at 1-1.

UNBC outshot the Dinos 21-19, with Unreiner forced to make 10 saves on the game while MacFarlane stopped seven Calgary shots.

The Dinos wrap up their season with two more weekends against the Pacific Division, beginning with a trip to visit Fraser Valley and Victoria next week.

"Two more tough ones coming up," said McDonnell. "Victoria is traditionally very tough away so we'll prepare for them, and hopefully we can get some points out of them and Fraser Valley."

Calgary wraps up the season with a homestand Oct. 26-27 when they host UBC and Trinity Western. UNBC, meanwhile, plays a two-game set at Trinity Western next week.
