BOX SCORE CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team was shut out by the Trinity Western Spartans on Oct. 12 in a 1-0 game at West Varsity Pitch.
On a cool, windy Saturday afternoon on the University of Calgary campus, the Dinos returned home after two straight weekends on the road and securing a playoff spot for the first time since 2008.
In the first half, the play was dominated by the Spartans for the majority of the 45 minutes. In the first 15, the first major opportunity to score came from Trinity Western when a cross from the far corner of the field found the head of Krista Gommeringer but it sailed wide.
Later in the frame, a cross from defender Colleen Webber made it's way to Gommeringer once again and she made no mistake this time, finding the low left corner of the net to score the first, and only, goal of the game. The other assist came from defender Jenn Castillo, which would eventually be the game winner.
In the second half, the Spartans continued to dominate in Calgary's end and a second goal in the game almost came to fruition when Gommeringer once again had an opportunity to head it into the back of the net. The cross bar was the Dinos saviour on the shot.
As the game was winding down, Calgary finally began to put on the pressure. A run up the sidelines from
Nikki Furukawa allowed her to cross it through the six-yard box and past Trinity Western goalkeeper Rachel Bedek.
Ann Stranges ended up on the other side of the net, and although it was wide open, her shot went high and over the cross bar.
The Dinos will take on the UBC Thunderbirds in their second last game of the regular season at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
