CALGARY – A six-goal second period propelled the University of Calgary Dinos to a wild  9-5 win over the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at the Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday night.

Trailing after 20 minutes, Calgary stormed back to take a huge lead in the second period. The teams went back-and-forth in the third with the final buzzer sounding with 14 goals on the scoreboard.

"We talked [in the first intermission], but there wasn't anything crazy to talk about, we just had to clear up some things and tighten up," said Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "It's one of those games where when it gets going, you just want it to end."

"Every game, we've learnt a little more about how we need to play to win," added Howell.

Looking to rebound from a 3-1 setback on Friday night, UBC scored first at the 11:03 mark of the first period. Intercepting a pass in the Dinos' end, Greg Fraser broke in alone and capitalized for his first CIS goal unassisted.

Facing their first deficit of the season, Calgary got their legs going following the Fraser goal as they played their best hockey of the period down the stretch. Despite the better effort though, Scott MacDonald scored his first of the season off a rebound to give the Thunderbirds a two-goal lead at 13:38.

With a chance to regroup in the intermission, the Dinos came out firing in the middle frame.

It started in the first five minutes of the second as Calgary potted three quick goals in under five minutes to take their first lead of the game. First-year forward Chris Collins got the Dinos on the board 1:43 into the stanza and was followed up by Spencer Edwards who redirected the puck past netminder Steven Stanford for his second of the year.

Collins scored two more goals to complete the hat-trick in a mere 5:34 span. His third goal signalled the end of Stanford's night as he was replaced by Matt Hewitt after allowing four goals in eight shots to begin the period.

Collins ended the night with three goals and two assists, collecting first star honours.

Registering his second goal in as many nights, Ryan Harrison made it a 5-2 game, scoring on a shot that broke his stick.

Max Ross put the finishing touches on a six-goal second period as he rung one off the bar and in for his first of the season.

A sloppy final period saw Calgary and UBC exchange goals with each squad scoring three. Cory Pritz, Brett Bartman and Taylor Stefishen found the back of the net for the Dinos with Bartman's goal marking his first in the regular season as a Dino. Fraser picked up his second of the game in the third for UBC while Nick Buonassisi and Luke Lockhart also netted their first goals in the CIS.

Calgary outshot UBC 31-29. The Dinos were 2-2 on the power play, while the Thunderbirds went 1-2.

On Oct. 18-19, the Dinos will play a home-and-home set versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Friday night's game will take place in Lethbridge before shifting to the Father David Bauer Arena the next day.

Next weekend, UBC will host their opener against the Regina Cougars with games on Oct. 18-19.
