CALGARY - On the final day of the Calgary Cup, the University of Calgary Dinos men's team took on the Westminister College Griffins at Jack Simpson Gymnasium and defeated them 79-66.
In the first quarter, both teams traded points, and leads and Westminister came out with just a one point lead at 14-13. Quincy Bair was leading all scorers with six points.
The Griffins only built up to a five point lead in the second, but the Dinos continued to try to close the gap. Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson started his torrent of scoring with 12 in the first half. The Dinos would head into the second half up 30-29.
The third quarter saw a 4-0 run right off the bat for the Dinos with all four poitns coming from Ogungbemi-Jackson. The third was also Calgary's most successful quarter of the game. They scored 25 points to Westminister's 17.
Ogungbemi-Jackson couldn't be stopped in the second half was he ended up with an outstanding 34 points in the game as they Dinos sailed to a 79-66 win over the Griffins. Josh Turner had another 13 for the Dinos whole Philip Barndt added ten more with eight rebounds.
For the Griffins, three players hit double digits including Tallon Robertson with a team-high 20 points. Blake Skidmore and Bair each added another 12 for Westminister.
The Calgary Dinos women's team fell to the York Lions 70-67 at their final game of the Calgary Cup tournament at the Jack on Saturday.
The opening quarter was a close one with the Dinos leading 14-13. Kristie Sheils scored two three-pointers in the first ten minutes to keep Calgary in the lead. At half time, the score read 32 all as both teams continued to battle it out. Lindsey Agnew had a big second quarter for the Dinos sinking all three of her shots for seven points.
In the third quarter Calgary outscored the Lions 20-14, gaining a lead as big as eight points. The Dinos headed into the final quarter up 52-46.
The final ten minutes of the game saw York eat away at Calgary's lead throughout the quarter. With two minutes left, Lawrie Saunders fouled out, leaving a big gap at the post, allowing the Lions to gain a seven points lead late in the frame.
Despite putting forth their best efforts in the final minute, the Dinos would fall 70-67. Brianna Ghali scored a team-high 14 points for Calgary, followed by Sheils with 11 of her own. Jessica Thielen and Agnew both added nine.
For York, Nadia Qahwash scored a game-high 17 points. Erin Sarapnicks added 13, Kayla Pangos had another 12 and Courtney Osbournse scored 10.
Calgary heads to Toronto to compete at Ryerson University in a tournament next weekend.
