Dinos defeat Thunderbirds for first win of the new year

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY - The No. 2 Calgary Dinos women's hockey team tallied its 14th win of the season 4-2 over the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

Starting off the new year on the right foot, this marks the sixth win in a row and third of the season over the Thunderbirds as the Dinos went on to win it 4-2. Goal scorers for Calgary included veteran defender Stephanie Ramsay with four points, Hayley Wickenheiser with three, and Jenna Smith with two points of her own.

The Thunderbirds put the pressure early on, and a Calgary give away would give UBC their first chance of the game. Goaltender Amanda Tapp would come up with the big save to keep the game scoreless.

The first goal of the game would come from Smith for her seventh of the season. Hayley Wickenheiser would make her way out from behind the Dinos blue line and send a pass up the middle to a wide-open Smith. The arts student from Swift Current would make no mistake, beating UBC goaltender Danielle Dube, going top shelf. Stephanie Ramsay would notch her ninth assist of the season while Wickenheiser's pass would count for her 13th.

UBC began the period with a man advantage as Ramsay took a penalty as the horn blew to end the first period, but they would survive the Thunderbird powerplay.

Fresh out of the penalty box, Ramsay would get her second point of the game, and eighth goal of the season, with a pass from veteran Erin Davidson. Captain Tanya Morgan would pick up an assist on the play to put the Dinos up by two, early in the second period.

With less than five minutes left in the period, Calgary would find themselves down two players. UBC would capitalize on the two-man advantage as second-year Rebecca Unrau would beat Dinos goaltender Tapp for their first goal of the night, and her ninth of the season. Rookie Stephanie Schaupmeyer would add the assist.

Six minutes into the third period, Calgary's Morgan would enter the penalty box and leave the Dinos down a man. Despite the disadvantage, Wickenheiser would make quick work of an opportunity in UBC's end, scoring the shorthanded goal with a short-side backhanded shot, with help from a pass from teammate Ramsay. The Shaunavon native's goal was her eighth on the season, good for 20 points in 11 games.

Despite being down by two goals for the second time in the game, the Thunderbirds wouldn't give up so easily. Veteran Kaitlin Imai found herself on a breakaway, beating a Dino in the process to get a shot off. It would beat Tapp for UBC's second goal of the game with second-year Cailey Hay picking up the assist.

"For our first game of the second half of the season, I don't think we were sharp, but the effort was there," said Dinos head coach Danielle Goyette. "We have to take what we brought tonight and build on the win to get better for tomorrow."

The Dinos would cap off the game with a empty-netter goal, scored by Ramsay for her second of the game, with Wickenheiser picking up the assist as she won the faceoff. Calgary would outscore UBC 25-14 in the win.

No. 2 Calgary will host the Thunderbirds Saturday at 2 p.m. in the second game of the double header home stand.
