BOX SCORE WINNIPEG - A lightning fast start lifted the No. 10-ranked Calgary Dinos to a convincing 74-53 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory improves the Dinos record to 14-2 and in sole possession of first place in the Prairie Division. Winnipeg with the loss drops to 5-12.
At 14-2, the Dinos head home to prepare for next week's showdown with the Regina Cougars, which will determine first place in the Prairie Division and could decide who hosts the Canada West Final Four.
"This was a much more dominant performance for us tonight, against a team that loves to compete for possession," said Dinos head coach
Damian Jennings. "Our defensive rotations and early transition scores in the first half opened up the game for us.
"Of course we would have liked a repeat in the second half but I'm not disappointed at all - we moved forward as a group tonight in how we dictated the physicality of winning possession in someone else's gym."
Calgary outscored the Wesmen 28-10 in the opening ten minutes and continued to put the pressure on the Wesmen, scoring 24 points in the second quarter to open up a 52-22 lead at halftime.
Winnipeg outscored the Dinos 18-9 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 60-40 after three quarters. The teams both put up 13 points in the fourth to make the final tally 74-53.
The Wesmen were guilty of 16 turnovers in the opening half which in turn resulted in 21 points for Calgary.
Dinos guard
Kristie Sheils led all scorers with 16 points, including four-three pointers.
Alex Cole finished with 13 while
Jessica Franz had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 11 points and seven rebounds. Yael Kaplan added 10 points.
Calgary will be at home next week hosting the University of Regina Cougars. Winnipeg will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday and Saturday.
