Dinos pull away in second half to take over top spot

BOX SCORE WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos started slowly but a strong second half lifted the team to a 65-55 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday evening in Winnipeg.
 
The hometown Wesmen were up 14-9 after the opening quarter and extended their lead to 34-27 heading into the halftime break. The Dinos dominated the second half outscoring the Wesmen 38-21 in the final 20 minutes.
 
Calgary with the win improves to 13-2, taking over top spot in the Prairie Division. Winnipeg suffers its fifth loss in a row and drops to 5-11 in the Prairie Division.

"Winnipeg certainly started as the aggressor, and in their 2-3 zone did well to keep possession," said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. "In the second half we pushed the transition more to the tempo we like to dictate. We walk away tonight disappointed in not dominating the game the way we would have liked, but we look forward to the opportunity tomorrow to write the wrongs of today."
 
Jessica Franz led Calgary with 19 points and five assists. Alex Cole added 10 points and a team high nine rebounds.
 
Winnipeg was led by Tia Coulter's 18 points. Lauren Anderson finished with 12. Stephanie Kleysen hauled down a game high 12 rebounds and dished out five assists.
 
After the halftime break the Dinos went on a 7-1 run early in the third quarter to tie the score at 35-35. Winnipeg was unable to keep up with Calgary as the Dinos took control of the game outscoring the Wesmen 22-5 in the third quarter to carry a 39-29 lead into the final frame. Winnipeg kept pace with the Dinos in the final ten minutes as both teams scored 16 points to make the final tally 65-55.
 
The two teams will meet on Friday night at 5 p.m. MT at the Duckworth Centre. The game will be the sixth annual "Shoot for the Cure" fundraiser in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
