Clean sweep for lady Dinos

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – Led by seniors Alex Cole and Jessica Franz, the unranked University of Calgary Dinos completed a weekend sweep of Pacific Division opponents Saturday, dispatching the Trinity Western Spartans 78-56 in the Jack Simpson Gym.

With the victory, the Dinos improve to 12-2 on the season and keep pace in a neck-and-neck battle for first place in the Prairie Division with the Regina Cougars – their next opponent on home court in two weeks' time. Trinity Western, meanwhile, falls to 3-11 on the year.

The win came on the heels of an exhausting overtime upset of No. 1 Fraser Valley Friday night, and it did take a while for the Dinos to find their legs. But they pulled away in the second quarter and continued to increase the spread as the game wore on. And while head coach Damian Jennings wasn't exactly jumping up and down about his team's effort on the night, he understood the difficulty of refocusing after an emotional win less than 24 hours earlier.

“We still haven't put together two great performances in a row, but in fairness to the players they put a lot of effort into last night's win and there's a fatigue index there,” said Jennings. “It's good to get a win and to see both teams get a sweep this weekend, but we still have the ambition of two very good performances on a weekend, not just two wins.”

Cole had her most producting night of the season, scoring 19 in just 22 minutes on the floor, while Franz continues to be a key leader for Calgary on the floor with her 16-point, 16-rebound effort – easily a season-high on the glass for her. Kristie Sheils added 14 points off the bench for the Dinos, who got contributions for all 12 players on the roster in this one.

The Spartans had solid outings from Chelsey Olsen and Holly Strom with their 22- and 19-point nights, respectively. Strom was also the team's rebounding leader with eight, while the 22 points were a career high for Olsen.

Trinity Western held a slim 14-13 lead after the opening quarter, but the Dinos quickly reversed that in the second and led the rest of the way. It was 32-25 Calgary at half time, and the Dinos went on to put up at least 20 in each of the final two quarters to record their 12th win of the season, all but clinching a playoff spot in the process.

While the Spartans head home for their next series against Mount Royal (5-9) next week, the Dinos return to intra-divisional play on the road. It's a short turnaround as they head east to face the Winnipeg Wesmen (5-10) Thursday and Friday at the Duckworth Centre.
