BOX SCORE
WINNIPEG – One night after being dominated by the Manitoba Bisons in a 6-0 loss, the Dinos bounced back to claim a 3-2 victory in double overtims Saturday night at the Max Bell Centre in Winnipeg.
Walker Wintoneak scored the game-winner at 3:43 of the three-on-three second extra period as the Dinos improved to 14-8-0 on the year and pulled within two points of second place and a first-round playoff bye. Manitoba drops to 13-5-4.
For Calgary, the star was goalie Jacob DeSerres. One night after he came in off the pine for starter Dustin Butler, DeSerres looked unstoppable for most of the night, recording 30 saves. Also with a significant role, Calgary forward Corey Banfield notched a pair of goals.
For the Bisons, the first 50 minutes were a struggle, as a rejuvenated Calgary defence kept them off the puck and unable to score. In the last ten minutes of the third period, though, forwards Ian Duval and James Henry scored to knot things up and send it to overtime. Under duress on several occasions, goalie Jesse Deckert had a good night as well, picking up 28 saves.
After a heated finish between the two teams on Friday night, the first period saw a more inspired and aggressive Calgary team. Their defense was strengthened by several intercepted passes and great puck pressure, which turned into offense at the eight minute mark. Here, Banfield received a beautiful pass from forward Brock Nixon in the slot - his shot beat Deckert and provided the Dinos their first goal of the weekend, putting them up 1-0 after 20.
In the second, both teams went scoreless, but Manitoba didn't lack in chances. With four power plays provided to them, the Calgary penalty kill and a few flashy pad saves from DeSerres kept them off the board heading into the third.
The first half of the third period were quiet, but Manitoba was able to turn on the jets and apply pressure to Calgary's defense for the rest of regulation. Scoring the first equalizer was Duval, on a big rebound set up by a point blank shot by Travis Bobbee. After that, Calgary was able to grab the lead back with a beautiful slot shot by Banfield, beating Deckert top shelf stick-side.
With one minute left in regulation, the Bisons rushed the net and Henry knocked in another equalizer - tying the game at two and sending it to extra time.
Without any significant action in the first overtime, the Bisons were caught on a slow change late in the second overtime. On the ensuing scramble, forward Walker Wintoneak knocked in the puck - giving the Dinos the win and the weekend split
The Dinos, meanwhile, head home for a home-and-home series against Canada West's top seed, Alberta. Calgary will be the home team on Friday, Jan. 25, with the puck dropping at 7 o,m. at Father David Bauer Arena, with the series moving to Edmonton Saturday night.
