BOX SCORE
CALGARY - The Dinos continued their season on a winning note with their third win over the Manitoba Bisons this year on Jan. 18 at Father David Bauer Arena by a score of 5-2.
Calgary got the scoring started right off the bat on a power play. On a cross-checking penalty, Canada West leading scorer Hayley Wickenheiser made no mistake with the man advantage. A slapshot from the Olympian went straight through traffic and beat goaltender Dee-Ana Marion for her first of the night. She was assisted by Jenna Smith and Iya Gavrilova.
Around the ten minute mark, the Dinos netted their second of the night. With the man advantage once again, this time the goal came from second-year defenseman Stephanie Zvonkovic, unassisted.
Near the end of the period, some sloppy play in Calgary's end got the Dinos in trouble. Despite a great save by goaltender Amanda Tapp from behind her, the Dinos were unable to get the puck past the blue line. Bisons rookie Nicole McGlenen put the puck past Tapp on a scramble in front of the net with less than five minutes left in the first. McGlenen was assisted by Manitoba teammates Kristin Cockerill and Brenley Anderson.
The final four minutes in the first frame required the Dinos to kill two penalties back-to-back, but they would do so, and head into the second with a one-goal cushion.
Near the halfway mark in the second period, Bison Kayleigh Wiens was sent to the box for slashing, the fifth power play for Calgary. The Dinos got a number of shots off within the first minute, and eventually fourth-year Erika Mitschke drew the penalty, good for a penalty shot. Heading down the ice on Marion's left side, the forward cut to the right and got off a back-handed shot that would head top corner to give the Dinos a 3-1 lead.
Right before the period was up, the combination of Wickenheiser and Gavrilova was at it again. With the third-year Russian making her way behind the net, she found Wickenheiser open in front. Wickenheiser's shot dribbled past Marion with less than three minutes left in the second. Heather Berzins also picked up an assist on the Dinos' fourth goal of the game.
The third period saw two more goals scored, one for the visitors and another from the home team. Mitschke scored her second of the night, another power play goal and Wickenheiser assisted for her third point of the game.
The Bisons also scored, netting their second of the night, this time from fourth-year defenseman Kyleigh Palmer, assisted by Nellie Minshull, currently tied for eighth in the Canada West scoring race.
Manitoba and Calgary go at it again tomorrow night at Father David Bauer Arena at 6 p.m.
