Vikes down Dinos

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – A very strong University of Victoria team took control early and didn't let up as they beat the University of Calgary Dinos 3-0 at West Varsity Soccer Pitch.

Calgary was in search of their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon. Last weekend the Dinos came out with two draws, including one against nationally ranks Alberta. Victoria entered the contest with a 2-0-1 record.

“I think we need to be a little more switched-on when we are defending,” said head coach Matthew Sheppard. “Once we addressed that in the second half I thought the girls played really well and took the game to Victoria up until the third goal, I think if we had got a goal that we could have quite easily got a second one”.

The Dinos appeared to have luck on their side as the Vikes scoring chances continuously found the metal bar in the early going. Things eventually turned around for Victoria though as they found the back of the net at the 24th minute. The play started with another shot off the post, Kristen Barton was able to make a save on the rebound, but the third attempt on net finally went in as Jackie Harrison put the Vikes up 1-0.

It didn't take long for Victoria to extend their lead as they made it 2-0 in the 27th minute. Jaclyn Sawicki started it all with some strong movement before the ball eventually landed on the foot of Emma Greig who beat the stretched out Calgary 'keeper.

The offence started to turn around for Calgary after only mustering two shots in the first half. The Dinos had some of their best possessions and chances in the second half; but were unable to score against a talented Vikes squad.

In the second half the Dinos made a number of substitutions, giving their new players plenty of experience to begin the season against several tough foes.

Victoria scored to make it 3-0 in the 75th minute as Lindsay Hoetzel beat Barton after missing on her early chances in the half.

Calgary will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Dinos hit the road next weekend as they head south to battle the Pronghorns in Lethbridge on Sept. 29.
