CALGARY - A penalty corner conversion midway through the second half was all the University of Victoria Vikes would need as they defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Canada West women's field hockey action.
The win follows a 3-1 Vikes triumph on Saturday in the opener, giving Victoria the sweep over a young - and improving - Dinos team at Hawkings Field.
With the game scoreless after 35 minutes, the Dinos were whistled for an infraction in the 49th minute, resulting in a short corner opportunity for the Vikes. Annie Walters-Shumka made good on the opportunity, chipping the ball past Dinos netminder
Sydney Hamm for the game's only goal.
From there, both teams had several chances but were unable to cash in on their opportunities. As time wore on in the second half, the Dinos applied pressure and received multiple corner opportunities of their own, but every time they were stymied by either the well-positioned Victoria defence or the solid goaltending of Sheriden Goodmanson, who earned the shutout.
Despite the weekend sweep, Dinos head coach Jenn Swagar focused on the progress her young team has made after losing 11 players from the CIS silver medal-winning squad from a year ago.
"It was really up-and-down today, and I think our basics were lacking in some areas today," said Swagar. "Our attack was better at times, and our theme this year is progression. Every game we want to see some improvements in things we've asked - today it was game plan execution and capitalizing on some of the chances we're presented with. We executed our corners well today and got the ball on net every time, but they played great defence. Now, we have to work on putting the ball in the net."
The Vikes get a breather next week before hosting UBC for a weekend series Sept. 29-30 in Victoria. Calgary, on the other hand, heads on the road next weekend to face the defending national champion Thunderbirds for a two-game set Sept. 22-23.
