CALGARY – On a night that began with an emotional pre-game presentation by head coach Dan Vanhooren, the University of Calgary Dinos could be forgiven for being a little sluggish early – but a second half to remember by seniors Tyler Fidler and Boris Bakovic lifted Calgary to a 94-78 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night.

Winnipeg closes the season with a 4-16 record, while the Dinos end up with the unlikeliest of .500 marks at 10-10, needing a six-game win streak down the stretch to reach that milestone. The fourth-place team in the Prairie Division, Calgary will take on the winner of the Pacific Division in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal in two weeks' time – but UBC or Victoria can wait. The night was about more than basketball, and that started before the tip-off.

Vanhooren recognized Fidler, Bakovic, Dustin Reding, and Keenan Milburn before the game began, highlighting their careers in Dinos jerseys.

When the game tipped off, Calgary took a 26-19 lead after the first quarter only to see it cut to just a three-point edge at the half. A 69-63 advantage after three quarters made way for a big fourth, where Calgary outscored Winnipeg 25-15 en route to the 16-point victory.

Eric Zimmerman had a big night off the bench for the Wesmen, shooting 8 of 14 from the field to score 25, hauling down nine rebounds in the process. He was joined on the Winnipeg leaderboard by Mark McNee's 14 points along with 11 from Andrew Cunningham.

Fidler and Bakovic combined for 47 points on the night, while Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson took a back seat and let the seniors do most of the scoring – and still ended up with 19 points. Reding had a solid 10 points on the night after getting the fifth-year start, while Andrew McGuinness went three-for-three from beyond the arc to score nine.

With 26 points in his last-ever home game, Fidler wraps up his career with 1,547 – good enough for fourth on the Dinos' all-time scoring list and 17th in Canada West history. Bakovic, meanwhile, wraps up his career with 2,282 points – exactly 100 better than Andrew Spagrud, the man he passed to become the unofficial leading scorer in Canadian university basketball history.

The Dinos will watch the scoreboard next week to ascertain just who their first-round opponent will be. UBC heads to Victoria to take on the Vikes next Saturday night, and the winner will earn the top seed in the Pacific Division and play host to the Dinos a week later.
