BOX SCORE CALGARY – The Manitoba Bisons grabbed the lead midway through the fourth quarter and hung on for their first victory of the season, defeating the Calgary Dinos 76-68 Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.
The win evens the team's records at 1-1 after Calgary won the series opener Friday night.
The Bisons opened the game on a 10-0 run, part of a 19-point opening quarter, before the Dinos settled in and pulled within six after the opening 10 minutes. Calgary carried the play in the second, outscoring Manitoba 22-18, and it was a two-point Manitoba lead at half time.
The third quarter solved nothing and, though the Dinos fought back and took a three-point lead at two points in the fourth, a second-chance three-ball by Stephan Walton put Manitoba up for good with just over two and a half minutes to play and the Dinos managed just four points from that point on.
Five Bisons hit double digits in scoring, led by Walton's 15-point effort. Xavier Smith added 13, while Yigit Ozsayiner chipped in with a dozen. Jonar Huertas and Davidson Joseph picked up 10 points each for the Bisons, who shot nearly 41 per cent from the field on the night.
The Dinos got another solid performance from
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson, who followed up his 33-point effort Friday with 21 more, but the supporting cast didn't provide enough scoring for the Dinos to prove successful.
Thijin Moses and Clay Mulumba scored eight each, as did
Youri Anissovets off the bench, while freshman
Jasdeep Gill picked up seven for Calgary.
The Dinos remain home next weekend for a two-game series against the Alberta Golden Bears beginning Thursday, Nov. 8 with a 6 p.m. tip-off in the Jack. The Bisons, meanwhile, returns home to Winnipeg where they will host the Brandon Bobcats Nov. 9-10.
