BOX SCORE CALGARY - It may have been Black Friday but goals didn't come cheap as the No. 2 University of Calgary Dinos got just enough offence to defeat the Mount Royal Cougars 1-0 at Flames Community Arenas.
Stephanie Ramsay and
Jenna Smith, both Arts Majors, painted a pretty picture on what proved to be the lone goal at 10:11 of the first period as Smith fed a beautiful pass from behind the net to Ramsay who made no mistake burying it on the glove side.
The ice seemed tilted in the first period as the Cougars paraded their way to the penalty box an astounding nine times. The game could have gotten out of hand early if it wasn't for the sensational play of Jess Ross, who turned aside puck after puck as she was peppered with shots early and often.
Both teams seemed to settle down in the second period as the game turned into a chess match with neither team wanting to make a mistake. The Cougars avoided the box and were rewarded with three powerplays of their own which they failed to capitalize on despite some great chances.
Midway through the second, Cougar forward Emily Harrison dangled her way into a great scoring opportunity but Dinos 'tender
Amanda Tapp was equal to the task, denying the winger with one of her 25 saves on the evening.
Perhaps the Cougars best opportunity to tie the game came 5:22 into the second period when
Hayley Wickenheiser was escorted to the penalty box to give the Cougars a two-man advantage. But Tapp held the fort as the Cougars failed to generate any real scoring opportunities.
The third period was predictably tight checking as the Dinos had their sights set on the shutout.
With only a few minutes to play the Dinos had a chance to finish the Cougars off on a two-on-one but Ross flashed the leather to make a beautiful glove save.
The Cougars pulled the goalie with a minute left and applied the pressure but were thwarted by Tapp as Hodgson tried the wrap-around in what was MRU's last great chance.
The 6-6-2 MRU Cougars now stay at home to play the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
Meanwhile, the Dinos improve to 11-2-1 and play a home-and-home with the Lethbridge Pronghorns the same weekend to wrap up conference play in 2012. That series begins Nov. 30 in Lethbridge before returning to Father David Bauer Arena Dec. 1.
