BOX SCORE CALGARY – Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson put up 24 points and
Thijin Moses hauled in 15 rebounds as the University of Calgary Dinos moved back to the .500 mark with a 73-62 win over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.
The Dinos grabbed the lead early in the first quarter and never looked back, taking the first-ever meeting between the two schools to sweep their Pacific Division weekend after a Thursday win over Mount Royal. Calgary improves to 4-4 on the season, while UNBC falls to the same 4-4 mark.
Calgary did it with a solid defensive effort, holding the Timberwolves to just 23 field goals and 32 per cent shooting on the night while also winning the battle on the glass with 52 rebounds against 43 for UNBC.
“The guys stuck to the game plan tonight,” said Calgary coach
Dan Vanhooren. “UNBC is very well coached, and the move the ball around quickly, so we had to get them out of that rhythm and slow things down on offence. That allowed us to control the tempo of the game a little more.”
After a slow start to the game with just a 14-10 lead for Calgary after the first quarter, the Dinos exploded for 23 points in the second quarter while holding the Timberwolves to just 13. UNBC returned the favour in the third quarter with a 21-13 advantage to nearly double their first-half total, but the Dinos put up another 23 in the fourth to walk away with the 11-point victory.
Ogungbemi-Jackson's 24-point night led the way for all players, shooting 9-of-17 from the field while dishing out four assists and pulling in six rebounds, a block, and two steals in a 37-minute outing. Rookie
Mitch Ligertwood added 12 points as well for the Dinos, playing just 16 minutes and bringing in four rebounds, while Moses had a quiet night scoring but was dominant on the glass with his 15 rebounds, adding three blocked shots.
For UNBC, Sam Raphael responded with 15 points, while Charles Barton scored 12 and equalled that performance on the glass with a dozen rebounds. Francis Rowe and Joel Rybachuk added eight points each.
Calgary shot just over 38 per cent from the field and 61 per cent from the line, while the Timberwolves managed just 8-of-16 from the charity stripe.
The Timberwolves return home to host Alberta and Saskatchewan next weekend, while Calgary also heads west to face the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes next weekend to wrap up the first half of the 2012-13 schedule.
