BOX SCORE CALGARY – Each Calgary team grabbed a win in their own barn this weekend as the University of Calgary Dinos won game two of Crowchild Classic action 4-1 over the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

“Mount Royal plays real hard, they are a very aggressive team,” discussed head coach Mark Howell. “Last night they definitely opened our eyes for sure, tonight for the most part we played a smart game and moved the puck around to get opportunities.”

The win improves the Dinos to 7-7-0 with only two games left until the Christmas break. Mount Royal falls to 4-12-0, six points behind Calgary for the final playoff spot in Canada West. The victory by the Dinos also clinches the inaugural Crowchild Classic title for Calgary with the standings sitting at 8-3-2.

“It was a big win with this being the first year Mount Royal is in our league, I'm not sure about the other sports but they were one of the top teams in the ACAC and have given us a lot of stiff competition and played us hard,” explained Max Ross

Last night the Cougars stunned their cross town rivals with a 3-2 victory at the Flames Community Arenas. With two goals in the second period Mount Royal jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage before Calgary responded with two of their own. Kevin King and Alex Dzielski netted the two Dino goals.

Not wanting to fall behind for a second straight night, Calgary found the back of the net at the 5:57 mark of the opening stanza. Kodie Curran sailed a shot from the blue line where he beat the glove hand of Dalyn Flette for his second of the season. Ross and Blake Clement notched assists on the play as the home team led 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Another even second period saw the two clubs exchange chances. The Dinos eventually extended their lead with less than five left in the middle frame. With the goaltender out for an extra attacker, Curran dished the puck to Brock Nixon who stepped out of the right corner and fired the puck past Flette. The tally was the Calgary captain's sixth goal of the campaign.

Ross would register his fourth goal of the year at the 3:14 mark of the third period. In a battle from the left side of the goal, Ross was the last one to get a handle on it before the puck past the line.

The line of Ross-Clement-Grant continued their stellar play in the third period as they made it a 4-0 game. Clement tipped in Dzielski's attempt from the blue line as the fourth-year forward collected his third of the season. Clement and Ross would both pick up their third points of the evening on the play at 10:42.

“I have taken a bigger role on the third line recently and have been playing with some pretty good players,” mentioned Ross. “There are some other veteran guys that have helped me out and contributed to my success as well.”

At 14:42 the Cougars scored their first goal of the night as Jeff Barrett squeaked in his second of the year from in close to round out the scoring.

Dustin Butler stopped 17 of 18 to rebound from a tough outing in his last appearance. Flette finished the night with 27 saves in the losing cause.

The Dinos wrap up play in 2012 next weekend with a home-and-home series against the Lethbridge Pronghorns. The series begins on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Father David Bauer Arena, with the rematch Dec. 1 in Lethbridge. Mount Royal travels to Saskatoon next weekend for a two-game set on Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
