Golden Bears sweep weekend set against Dinos

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Alberta Golden Bears showed why they are the No.2-ranked team in the country on Saturday night as they completed a two-game sweep of the No. 9 University of Calgary Dinos 4-1 at the Father David Bauer Arena.

The loss moves Calgary's record to 5-5-0 on the year as they go winless on the weekend for the first time this season. With the win, Alberta improves to 9-3-0 and move into first place in the conference after a 2-1 loss by the Saskatchewan Huskies against the Regina Cougars. The Golden Bears also extend their win streak to six games.

“We weren't good enough in both games, period,” remarked Calgary head coach Mark Howell. “We were outskated, outworked and outclassed.”

Last night the Dinos fell behind by three goals going into the third period and were unable to rebound as they were eventually knocked off by the Golden Bears 5-2 in Edmonton. Missing for a second straight game on Saturday was star defenceman Giffen Nyren. As a replacement, Calgary was able to bring Luke Egener back into the line-up for the first time this year on Friday night.

“We came out in the first period and killed all those penalties, which were an issue for us tonight. We went into the third period tied 1-1 and fall asleep right away and were right back on our heels chasing again,” explained Howell. “I think our guys want to consider themselves among the top teams right now, but at the moment they are not.”

The first period didn't go Calgary's way as the team would spend a large amount of the time killing penalties. Jesse Ismond was sentenced a game misconduct eight minutes in, forcing his team to play shorthanded for five minutes. While Alberta managed to outshoot Calgary 9-3, the penalty killing and goaltending stood tall for the home side to keep the contest deadlocked. Jacob DeSerres went on to make 25 saves on the evening, while his counterpart Real Cyr stopped 18 chances.

At the 6:29 mark of the second period the Golden Bears found the back of the net. Sean Ringrose broke through the middle of the ice and snapped a shot from the top of the hash marks for his seventh marker of the campaign.

In only his second game back from injury, Egener would knot the score for the Dinos. A blast from the right side of the blue line sailed past Cyr at 18:29. The goal was the defenceman's first of the year, with assists going to Kevin King and Brock Nixon.

Alberta restored their lead early in the third stanza. A one-timer set-up by Brett Ferguson into the slot found James Dobrowolski for his fifth of the campaign at 3:29.

At the 10:55 mark of the final period, the Golden Bears extended their lead. A steal by Torrie Dyck sent him all alone down the ice where he fired a shot through the pads of DeSerres for his sixth of the season.

Levko Koper would round out the scoring at the 16:08 mark for his fourth marker of the year as he connected on a quick pass from the left side to beat the Dinos' netminder.

Alberta outshot Calgary 29-19. The Dinos went 0-4 on the power play, while the Golden Bears were 0-5.

Next weekend the Dinos will get their first shot at the defending Canada West champion Saskatchewan Huskies at home on Nov. 16-17. Last season Calgary lost in triple overtime as Brett Ward sent Saskatchewan to nationals with the series clinching goal. The Golden Bears will be on the road again next weekend as they visit the Regina Cougars from Nov. 16-17.
