VICTORIA - The Calgary Dinos were close to grabbing their first win of the season, but a late goal by Victoria ended the game in a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon.
Though the Vikesheld the majority of the possession, it was not until the 68th minute that first-year Amanda Kurianowicz put them on the board. The goal came after Vikes keeper Sheriden Goodmanson was pulled to give the Vikes 11 field players for the attack.
For the Dinos, a second half goal by rookie
Nadia Izzo in the 39th minute gave Calgary the edge until the final minutes of the game. The tie gives the Calgary squad their first point of the season despite finishing short of qualifying for the CIS national championship.
Both the Vikes and Dinos showcase over 10 rookies on their squads, justifying the even play from both ends. The Dinos were the first to make a move towards goal as fourth-year
Keara Chicquen broke through the Vikes back line in the 5th minute of play. Chicquen appeared to be alone in on the Vikes keeper but speedy Vikes defender Lizzie Yates caught up in time to steal the ball at the top of the circle.
The Dinos pressed again in the 9th minute when captain
Carolina Romeo fed Dinos forward Izzo whose deflection landed on the stick of
Claire Beaton. Beaton had a quick shot on her reverse that skidded just wide of the goal mouth.
The remainder of the first half continued in the Dinos favour as the visitors earned a series of penalty corners that they were unable to capitalize on. The Dinos' best chance came on a corner in the 23rd minute that Romeo sent a low drag flick on target. Vikes keeper Goodmanson made the save with an out-stretched left toe to keep the Dinos at bay.
The Vikes had their best chance of the opening half in the 30th minute when a shot by Kurianowicz was on target but in an attempt to help the ball, forward Emily Fisher deflected it wide of the net. The 0-0 scoreline remained at the half.
In the second half, the Vikes were caught on their heals when Calgary capitalized off a scramble in front of the UVic net. Izzo tapped in a pass from Chicquen to get the Dinos on the board and up 1-0 in the 39th minute.
Bouncing back, the Vikes seemed to hem the Dinos in their own end for the second half and were unlucky not to pocket a few goals as the young UVic side tallied four short corners, while the Dinos struggled to break into the UVic 25-yard area.
The Vikes continued to penetrate the Dinos' circle but Calgary's central defender Romeo was a continual wall for the UVic women. Romeo picked off passes, stepped up to intercept and blocked several Vikes attempts.
In the final three minutes of the game, Beecroft pulled Goodmanson from goal to give the Vikes an extra field player advantage. The action paid off as the Vikes capitalized in the 68th minute of play when captain Kyla Kirby slipped a pass to Kurianowicz at the stroke mark. Kurianowicz turned and rolled the ball pass Dinos keeper
Sydney Hamm for the lone Vikes goal of the game.
The Dinos return home to close the season next weekend when they host the UBC Thunderbirds Oct. 13-14 at Hawkings Field.
