VICTORIA, B.C. – The Calgary Dinos dropped a 3-0 decision to the Victoria Vikes Saturday afternoon on Vancouver Island, ending their chances of a repeat trip to the CIS championship next month in Toronto.

The Vikes now move to a 3-2-0 record while the Dinos drop to 0-5-0 in Canada West.
 
The Vikes played a tight defensive game while generating substantial attacking opportunity, earning a 3-0 victory over the Dinos. With goals from three different forwards, University of Alberta-transfer Alanna Macdonald in the 26th minute, third-year Kayleen van der Ree in the 33rd, and rookie Amanda Kurianowicz in the dying minutes of the game, the Vikes demonstrated the strength of their attack against the Calgarian side.
 
Calgary struggled to maintain control of the ball from the first whistle although both sides played a scrappy style, swapping a series of turnovers in the early minutes of the game. With Carolino Romeo, Calgary's captain, receiving a yellow card in the first half, the Dinos were unable to recover. Two green cards and an additional yellow saw the visiting side play short for several minutes at a time and the Dinos could not make up the difference.
 
In the first 10 minutes of the match the two sides battled to gain the upper hand as possession was traded back and forth with a high turnover rate for both teams. Mid-way through the first half the Dinos had an opportunity on net when fifth-year Romeo intercepted the ball in the midfield and sent it into the circle for three waiting University of Calgary forwards but Sheriden Goodmanson, first-year goalkeeper for the Vikes, made a sliding save and the chance was unconverted.
 
In the 24th minute Romeo was given a yellow card for an intentional foul inside the Dinos' defensive 25 and was forced to sit out for several minutes. Two minutes later, the Vikes opened the scoring with a goal by Macdonald as she deftly slid the ball past rookie Calgary keeper Sydney Hamm.
 
In the 27th minute Calgary's Rachel Paul was given a green card for neglecting to be five yards from a free hit and the Dinos played with only nine on the field. Just before the end of the half, in the 33rd minute, striker Van der Ree tipped the ball past Hamm after UVic's Kyla Kirby dangled through the Dinos' midline and at the top of the circle slid the ball past their defenders for the touch by Van der Ree.  
 
The second half was dominated by the Vikes side and punctuated by stick-to-stick passing and long hits down the sideline. Calgary worked hard to generate opportunity but with a green card for Romeo in the 44th minute and a yellow card for Paul in the 58th minute the Dinos continued to play at a disadvantage. The final goal for the Vikes came in the 57th minute from first-year Kurianowicz.

With the win, the Vikes have secured a berth to the CIS National tournament in Toronto, Nov. 1-4. Next up for both teams is game two of the double-heade rSunday at noon MT at the University of Victoria.
