BOX SCORE EDMONTON - Needing only a point to clinch first place in the Prairie Division, as well as the hosting duties for the Canada West championship tournament, the No. 5-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears soccer team left no doubt of their intentions as they scored four goals en route to a 4-1 win over the visiting Calgary Dinos Saturday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.
The three points sees Alberta clinch first and the hosting duties, but more importantly, a 'bye' into the Canada West semifinals. Despite the loss, the Dinos still clinch a playoff spot thanks to Saskatchewan's 2-1 defeat of Lethbridge. Both the Dinos and Huskies are now guaranteed a playoff game, but they have yet to settle their positioning. The two teams are tied for second place with 21 points each. Second place in the Prairie Division will open the playoffs against the third place team from the Pacific division, the Victoria Vikes, while the Prairie third place team will play Trinity Western, which is in second place, in the quarterfinals. The UBC Thunderbirds have sewn up first place in the Pacific division as well as the other 'bye' to the semifinals.
The Golden Bears received goals from Jonah Feil, Christopher Roberts, Cameron Schmidt, and Marcus Johnstone, the team's leading goal scorer. Alberta goalie Jay Vetsch made six saves in the win. Schmidt, the team's lone fifth-year student-athlete, also had an assist.
Calgary goalie
Haydon Armstrong made nine saves in the loss, and substitute
Robin Whittaker scored the team's one goal.
Feil, in his fourth-year, got the ball rolling early when he scored his sixth goal of the season, off an Osmo Bimba cross, just 3:04 into the game.
Johnstone, who hadn't scored since netting a hat-trick on September 23, potted his team leading eighth goal and 13th point when he buried a rebound past Armstrong at 13:09.
The Dinos struck one back in the 38th minute when Whittaker beat Vetsch, but the two goal lead was restored just before half-time when defenceman Christopher Roberts powered a shot over Armstrong, and just under the crossbar, from 25-yards out in the 45th minute.
Schmidt, playing in his second last career home regular season game, easily scored the goal of the match when he took a Zenon Markevych pass in midfield, crossed over to the right hand side line, and then back inside towards the Calgary goal where he deked out three Dino defenders in-a-row along the top 18-yard box, and then Armstrong, before slotting the ball into the empty cage for the 4-1 goal. It was Schmidt's fifth goal and 10th point on the season.
The two teams will battle again on Sunday afternoon, at 2:00 pm at Foote Field. Calgary is looking to finish second in the standings, ahead of Saskatchewan, but the Huskies are in action as well, taking on Lethbridge on Sunday. Both Calgary and Saskatchewan, along with UBC, Trinity Western and Victoria, will return to Edmonton next weekend for the Canada West championship tournament.
