CALGARY –
Two power play goals 47 seconds apart late in the second period proved to be the difference as the Manitoba Bisons dropped the Calgary Dinos 4-1 Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.

With Calgary defenceman Ryan Gillen sent off on a major penalty for a check from behind, James Henry and Brendan Rowinski scored on the ensuing power play to blow open what had been a tight 1-0 game, giving the Bisons a three-goal cushion heading into the third period. The teams traded goals in the final stanza, with Kevin King potting the Dinos' only marker of the night, his fourth of the young season.

The loss drops Calgary to 4-3-0 on the season, with the win vaulting Manitoba to the same 4-3-0 mark.

Friday's match-up signified the first time these two clubs have played since Calgary eliminated Manitoba from last year's playoffs. The Bisons were heavy favorites after finishing 2011-12 with the conference's best record, but it was Calgary that took care of business sweeping away Manitoba on route to the finals.

Like they were most of last season when playing at Father David Bauer Arena, the Bisons were strong in the first period as they outworked the Dinos. After killing off an early penalty, Manitoba got on the board as defenceman Jeremy Schappert received a pass from Blair Macaulay while pinching in, and beat Dustin Butler with a shot from the hash marks. The marker was Schappert's second of the campaign and came just under four minutes into the game.

While they had yet to score a goal, the second period seemed to produce better results for the Dinos until late in the frame when Gillen was whistled. And after the Dinos had killed nearly four minutes of the penalty, the Bisons struck.

At 18:11 Henry, the former captain of the Vancouver Giants, got it started as he scored on a wraparound after several attempts by fellow Manitoba players couldn't get past Butler. Henry's power play goal was his first in CIS.

Rowinski tallied another one in for Manitoba 47 seconds later as he put in arebound in from alone in the slot. After scoring 12 goals last season, the goal was Rowinski's first of 2012-13 and put his side up 3-0 after 40 minutes.

Calgary broke the goose egg at the midway point of the third period while on a five-on-three advantage. A pass from the blue line by Cory Pritz lined up Kevin King for his fourth of the season through the legs of Jesse Deckert.

After Butler made a key save on Rowinski off a penalty shot to keep the Dinos within two, the Bisons made it 4-1. Lee Christensen received the puck at the point off the face-off and fired it behind the Calgary netminder for his first of the year at 12:46.

These two teams meet up again tomorrow night at Father David Bauer Arena with puck drop at 6 p.m. MT.
