BOX SCORE CALGARY – The 22-game win streak is over for the No. 1-ranked University of Calgary Dinos as Paige Wheeler scored the 4-3 overtime winner for the University of Regina Cougars on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
After a defensive struggle on Friday night, the offence broke through as Calgary slips to 5-0-1 and out of a first place tie with the Alberta Pandas, who won their sixth game of the year on Saturday. With the massive upset, Regina evens their record at 3-3-0 in large part to a 44-save performance by Jennifer Schmidt.
“At the end of the day, we have to be play 60 minutes and we didn't today, we played two of our best periods of the season in the second and third but that wasn't enough,” said head coach
Danielle Goyette. “For me it doesn't matter that you have a 22-game or five-game win streak, it is about how you play and the way you prepare for every night”.
Just like they had on Friday night, the Cougars got off to a strong start; the difference being on Saturday night was they were able to beat the Dinos' netminder
Jennifer Mallard, who was making her second start of the year. A scramble in the slot resulted in Sawchuk getting the puck to Jill Kennedy who got a shot over a down and out Mallard for her first goal of the season at 7:28.
Sawchuk would get in the action again later in the period as Regina extended their lead at 18:44. With Calgary killing off back-to-back penalties, Sawchuk put a shot on net from the right shot. While Mallard was able to make the original stop, Kylie Gavelin buried on the rebound to give the Cougars a 2-0 advantage through 20 minutes.
Calgary put the first period behind them and came out with a better effort in the second. Goaltender Schmidt was looking for her first win of the season and faced 18 shots in a great middle frame played by the home club. The Dinos would eventually solve the second-year goaltender as they found the back of the net at the 15:02 mark.
Hard work by
Iya Gavrilova resulted in her fourth goal of the season as she first gave the puck to her teammates in front of the net. Neither of the Dinos positioned at the top of the blue paint could knock a shot through, but the puck squeaked out back to Gavrilova on the left side of the goal as she made no mistake putting it in.
Calgary continued to put the pressure on Regina for the remainder of the period, but Schmidt stood tall to keep her team in the lead going into the second intermission.
Tanya Morgan tied the game on the power play at the 2:43 mark of the third. Gavrilova picked up an assist as Morgan banged in a rebound from the slot for her second of the campaign.
The Regina captain replied at the midway point of the final frame to reestablish the visitors' lead. Rianne Wight was the beneficiary of a couple of chances by the Cougars before she had the opportunity to score her third of the year from the doorstep.
The Dinos weren't going to go down without a fight as the team tied the game again with just over two minutes to go. A shot from the blue line by
Stephanie Ramsay got through a maze of players before making its way past Schmidt for a 3-3 score.
The game went into overtime where the Cougars got a two-on-one. Wight carried the puck in before she dished it off to Wheeler who just barely got the puck past the post and in for the game-deciding goal.
Calgary takes off for Manitoba next weekend as they battle the Bisons on Oct. 26-27. Regina returns to Calgary next weekend as they take on Mount Royal on Oct. 26-27.
