CALGARY – They're 6-0, they've given up two touchdowns in their last five games, and they have trailed on the scoreboard for exactly three minutes all season. And the No. 2 Calgary Dinos can clinch home field advantage throughout the Canada West playoffs Friday night when they take on the eighth-ranked Regina Rams (4-2) at Mosaic Stadium.
Kickoff goes at 7 p.m., live on CanadaWest.tv and QR77 radio.
GAME NOTES (.pdf)
With a victory or a loss by 15 points or less, the Dinos would clinch top spot for the second season in row – a feat never before accomplished in the history of the University of Calgary football program.
The second-ranked Dinos, pegged at No. 2 for the sixth straight week in the CIS Top 10, have scored nearly six times as many points as they have given up – in fact, with 293 points on the season, the Dinos have outscored both Alberta (0-6, 72 pts) and UBC (2-4, 138 pts), combined, by 83 points. The school single-season scoring record is 317 points, set in the Vanier Cup season of 1995 – and this year's edition needs just 24 points in its last two games to tie that record.
Defensively, the Dinos have been just as dominant. They've given up only 51 points this season, easily the best in the nation, and their 258 yards-per-game allowed is also tops in CIS football.
Friday night, they meet the Rams – a team they have beaten 10 consecutive times, including thrice in the playoffs, and which is reportedly without fifth-year quarterback Marc Mueller for the second week in a row. The Dinos won the previous meeting between the teams 37-21 back on Sept. 1 at McMahon Stadium, and won their last game in Regina in 2011 51-1 – coincidentally, the same score the Dinos beat Alberta by last Friday night in Edmonton.
The Dinos kick off against the Rams looking to go 7-0 for just the second time in team history – after first doing it last season – and extending their CIS-best regular season undefeated streak to 17 games.
Here's a look at the two teams:
No. 2 Calgary Dinos (6-0)
Last week: defeated Alberta 51-1
Next week: host Manitoba
Calgary has steamrolled through the first six weeks of the Canada West schedule, winning by 40 or more points four times and scoring at least 50 points on three occasions.
Eric Dzwilewski controls a Calgary offence that leads CIS with an average of 48.8 points scored per game, as the third-year quarterback leads Canada West in passing yards (1830), touchdown passes (13), and completion rate (69.2%). Even backup pivot
Andrew Buckley has stellar numbers, completing 20 of his 23 passes on the season for 262 yards and two touchdowns in limited duty. And third-stringer
Jimmy Underdahl got into the act, playing more than half of last week's 51-1 in in Edmonton over the Alberta Golden Bears.
Steven Lumbala is the reigning Canada West Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 217 yards and two touchdowns against Alberta and adding another score on a 31-yard touchdown catch. Lumbala ranks second in the conference with 505 rushing yards on the season and leads Canada West with eight touchdown runs and 101 rushing yards per game.
Chris Dobko leads Calgary's receivers with 29 catches on the year, while
Richard Snyder has a team-high 539 receiving yards.
Jake Harty – who doubles as the team's lead returner – is third on the team with 23 catches, while both
Taylor Nill and rookie
Brett Blaszko are both over 300 receiving yards. And the Dinos added another weapon, welcoming
Elie Bouka back from injury last week against Alberta. His first catch – on the first play of the game – went for a 74-yard touchdown, and he finished the game with four catches for 111 yards.
Mike Edem is – by far – Calgary's leader in both total tackles (47) and tackles for loss (9½).
Michael Klassen leads the Dinos with 4½ sacks, while
Wyatt Getty has three interceptions and both Getty and
Jamahl Knowles are tied for the team lead with four passes defended. Calgary kicker
Johnny Mark has been successful on 19 of his 22 field goal attempts this season.
The Dinos close out the Canada West schedule next Saturday at home against Manitoba.
No. 8 Regina Rams (4-2)
Before bye: lost to UBC 24-17
Next week: host Alberta
The Rams suffered a 24-17 setback to UBC last weekend and dropped two spots in this week's FRC-CIS Top 10 but remain in sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings and need one win in their final two games to ensure a home playoff game.
Starting under centre for the second consecutive week will be Zach Oleynik, who also got the start last week with fifth-year quarterback Marc Mueller still unavailable after being injured during the Manitoba game. Frankie Gray came in for Oleynik in the third quarter and performed well in relief, completing 14 of his 22 passes for 148 yards in a quarter and a half of playing time.
Michael Kiapway continues to lead the U of R's ground game, as the second-year back had 87 rushing yards against UBC and ranks third in Canada West with 488 yards on the season. Jared Janotta and Kolten Solomon lead a deep receiving corps for Regina, as Janotta leads the team in receptions (38) and receiving yards (425) and Solomon ranks second in the conference with four touchdown catches.
Kirby Kezama and Jamir Walker are tied with three other players for the CIS lead in interceptions, as both players have registered four picks this season. Walker also leads the nation with nine passes defended, while Chris Sciog has a team-high 34 total tackles and Ryan Wellman leads the Rams with three sacks on the season.
The Rams close out the Canada West schedule next week with a home game against Alberta (0-6) on Friday night.
