Sweep of Wesmen improves playoff chances

BOX SCORE WINNIPEG – The Calgary Dinos scored two goals in the second half to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 2-1 Saturday evening at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
 
Izak Lawrence (63rd minute) and Kieran Lane-Oppenheim (69th minute) scored for Calgary. Scott Ansell scored for Winnipeg in the 23rd minute.
 
Calgary's record jumps above .500 at 5-4-2. Winnipeg sits with a record of 0-9-3.
 
Winnipeg opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Scott Ansell took a perfect pass from Ralph Tolosa and snuck a shot past Calgary goalkeeper Jordan Unreiner for his second goal of the season. The Wesmen held a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
 
Both teams started the second half on a cautious not with neither team taking chances while defending their own end. But things soon changed in a hurry for the Dinos.
 
A pair of goals six minutes apart turned the momentum to Calgary's advantage. Izak Lawrence took a pass from Kiera Hay to beat Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago in the 63rd minute to tie the score at 1-1. It was Izak's third goal of the season. Calgary got the go ahead goal in the 69th minute with Kieran Oppenheim blasting a shot past Farago for his for his third goal of the campaign.
 
Winnipeg had chances in the closing moments but were met by a goalies best friend "the cross bar". Ross Pinhammer nailed the iron on a perfect penalty kick and in the closing minute of the match Justin Kutasiewich had Unreiner neat but his shot rang off the pipe to keep the score 2-1 in Calgary's favor.
 
Calgary had the advantage in shots by a margin of 19-15. Farago made eight saves for the Wesmen. Unreiner made five saves for Calgary.
 
Calgary will host Saskatchewan for a pair of games next weekend. Winnipeg will play at home next Sunday against UNBC.
