Bisons get key win in playoff battle

| By:
BOX SCORE WINNIPEG – The Dinos women's soccer team fell just short Saturday, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg.

The win improves Manitoba to 4-6-0, tying them with the Dinos (3-4-3) for the eighth and final playoff spot in Canada West.

The lone goal for Manitoba came off the foot of forward Daniella Screbo, at the end of an energetic first half for the team that gave them multiple chances at the net.

The Dinos, meanwhile, were shut out for the first time since Sept. 15 and lost their first game to Manitoba since Sept. 12, 2009. Though they played more aggressively in the second half, they were unable to get the goal opportunities they needed to tie the game.

As they did the night before, Manitoba came out dominant in possession – this time against a team higher than them in the standings. An early corner ball from Alison Kastner to Alyssa Robinson was denied by Calgary keeper Kristen Barton in the ninth minute in what ended up being the Bisons best early chance at a goal.

Thanks to continued aggression and good passing though, the 37th minute saw Manitoba finally capitalize. A breakaway ball for Screbo saw her outrun the defender and put a booming shot off the crossbar and over the goal line to put her team up 1-0.

Though Calgary came out far stronger in the second half in what ended up being a more chippy 45 minutes, they were unable to score. In the 75th minute, their best chance came off a corner ball, where Bisons keeper Chloe Werle dived to her left to make a game-saving save.

The Bisons are now tied with Calgary for the eighth and final Canada West playoff spot with 12 points and hold the tiebreaker over the Dinos.

Before the game, Manitoba honoured their senior players in their last regular season home game. Dena Yaghi, Alison Kastner, Julie Lafreniere, and Rhoni Mackenzie all end their eligibility at the end of the 2012 season.

Calgary will finish the regular season at home. On Sat. Oct. 20, they play Saskatchewan at noon, followed by a date with the Regina Cougars Sunday.
