Winnipeg wind blows Dinos to win

| By:
BOX SCORE WINNIPEG - The University of Calgary Dinos upended the home town Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 on a cold windy Friday night at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

NIkki Furukawa (14th minute), Lauren Deeks (49th minute) and Kyra Rae Horvath (75th minute) scored for Calgary. Sheri Hince scored the lone Winnipeg goal in the 59th minute.

The victory improves Calgary's record to 3-3-3 while the loss drops Winnipeg's record to 0-8-1.

The Dinos controlled the early play and took the lead through a fantastic solo effort by Nikki Furukawa on 18 minutes, after being fed on the half-way line by Amy Hockings.  Making a diagonal run from the right, Furukawa moved across the goal and onto her left foot and then chipped the 'keeper from a  tight angle, when a cross looked more likely.

The game was played in the Dinos half for the remainder of the first half, a strong wind giving Winnipeg an extra boost for the day, levelling the corner flags to be horizontal and making playing the ball out difficult. With three minutes remaining before the end of the half, Kristen barton was forced into a good reflex save low to her right, which was then cleared away by Andrea Nania close to the Dinos right goalpost.

After the half time break, the Dinos came out with more control and used the wind to their advantage to pile on early pressure.  From a quick corner taken by Maddie Lee, lauren Deeks turned to scramble a shot with slipped underneath the closing Winnipeg goalkeeper on the 49th minute.

While holding the majority of possession, a long throw-in from the right hand side found the unmarked Sherri Hince, who placed the ball in the far left corner.  With the game at 2-1 and Winnipeg battling hard to remain alive on the contest, the play went back and forth evenly, with neither team able to muster a clear chance until the 75 minute, when Kyra-Rae Horvath tucked in a loose ball after a maddie Lee cross from the right.

With five minutes remaining, substitute Taylor Stewart, faked a shot on the edge of the box and continued a run finishing with a shot that hit the post and came back to her.  With the ball lobbing back, she was unable to control that ball successfully and the 'keeper snuffed out the rebound.

"The girls controlled large periods of the match and probably deserved another goal or two for their hard work," said Dinos head coach Matthew Shepherd. "Lauren Vernon was excellent today, along with Kiyomi McInnes in the midfield. They prevented the Wesman from getting back into the game with some courageous tackling and pure determination. Kristen Barton was also very good in coming off her line to clear any danger."

The Dinos will take on the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday.
