Dinos edge Wesmen in first-ever meeting

BOX SCORE WINNIPEG - On a cool, blustery night the University of Calgary Dinos did just enough to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 2-1 Friday evening at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.
 
The Dinos scored two goals in the opening half and hung on in the second half to hold the a determined Wesmen squad to a single marker.
 
Izak Lawrence (7th minute) and Brett Howard (27th minute) scored for Calgary. Richie Rundle replied for Winnipeg in the 50th minute.
 
The victory pushed Calgary's record to 4-4-2. Winnipeg sits with a record of 0-8-3.
 
It did not take long for Calgary to hit the score board early in the match. Izak Lawrence opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match on a pass from Kieran Hay and beat Wesmen goal keeper Tyson Farago for his second goal of the season. Brett Howard gave the Dinos a 2-0 cushion in the 27th minute, scoring his first goal of the season.
 
The Wesmen with a strong wind at their backs put pressure on the Dino's the moment the second half got underway and at the 50th minute Winnipeg was rewarded.
 
Richie Rundle took a long pass from Oleg Andrushchyshyn and beat two defenders to the ball and was able to sneak a low shot past Calgary goalie Jordan Unreiner. The goal was Rundle's team leading fourth goal of the campaign.
 
Winnipeg held a 15-13 advantage in total shots. Unreiner made six saves for Calgary. Farago made five saves for the Wesmen, including a pair from in the goal area.
 
The two teams will wrap up their two match series Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
