BOX SCORE

CALGARY – For the second straight night a University of Regina Cougars goaltender tried to steal the show; again, though, all was for naught as the University of Calgary Dinos picked up the 2-0 win on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

The victory gives Calgary a badly-needed sweep of Regina. For the Cougars, the two straight losses leave them in the bottom of the Canada West as the Lethbridge Pronghorns created a five-point cushion for themselves in the final playoff position with a win tonight.

Cougars goaltender Lucas Gore headlined the first period as he stood tall to keep the game scoreless. The first great opportunity for the Dinos came during a scrum in front of the net as Taylor Stefishen was stoned by the left pad of Gore on the goal line. Gore had to hold his ground as only moments later Brock Nixon was there to swipe at the rebound, but was stopped.

In the last minute of the opening stanza, Nixon had another chance to score the game's first goal. The fourth-year forward broke in alone where he fired a quick shot which was swallowed up by the Regina netminder.

The middle frame mirrored the first as Calgary continued to drill Gore with shots. Defenceman Kodie Curran was able to beat Gore with a shot while cutting through the middle of the Cougars zone, but was robbed by the post.

Things got interesting in the final five minutes of the second period as the teams got more physical. Jordan Sawa went to the showers early after getting a major penalty for charging Dylan Hood. Under a minute later Nixon got assessed a two-minute hit to the head penalty, along with a 10-minute misconduct. Neither team would find the back of the net after f40 minutes of play.

Calgary finally broke open the scoring at 5:18 of the final period. Reid Jorgensen's attempt from the right side was denied by Gore, but Curran was in place at the left side of the net to put home the rebound. The goal was Curran's first since Jan. 14 of last season.

The Dinos picked up an insurance marker at 11:45 in a similar play to the first goal. Jorgensen found himself in the middle of a fight for the puck when he snapped off an attempt on Gore. The first-year goalie made the save only to have Nixon jump on the rebound for his ninth of the campaign to round out the scoring.

The Dinos outshot the Cougars 38-10. Calgary was 0-for-6 on the power play, while Regina went 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

Calgary closes out the road portion of their schedule next weekend as they take on the Saskatchewan Huskies on Feb. 3-4. The Dinos returns to Father David Bauer Arena for the final weekend of the regular season Feb. 10-11 when they host the Manitoba Bisons. The Cougars take the ice again on Feb. 3-4 when they take on the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
