Dinos end slide with tight win over Cougars

BOX SCORE

CALGARY –
In a game where the score didn't represent the play on the ice, the University of Calgary Dinos picked up a 2-1 victory in a must-win game against the University of Regina Cougars on Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

After failing to pick up a single point last weekend against the UBC Thunderbirds, the Dinos were desperate to get back in the win column against the Cougars. Calgary sat two points behind UBC coming into tonight, but had played two more games than the Thunderbirds. Regina was also scoreboard-watching on Friday as they eye the final playoff spot in Canada West, currently held by the Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Cougars have 10 points this season, while the Pronghorns have 13.

Calgary opened the scoring at the 2:31 mark of the first period. Mark Stojan's shot from the blue line went wide of the net, but off a bounce from the backboards, Walker Wintoneak grabbed the puck and fired it to the back of the net. The goal was Wintoneak's ninth of the campaign.

Undisciplined play caught up to the Dinos midway through the opening frame when Ryan Gillen was giving a two-minute penalty and ten-minute misconduct for checking from behind. While on the power play the Cougars capitalized as Tyler Penny snapped a shot past Dustin Butler for his fourth of the year at 12:17.

At 8:35 of the second period, Calgary restored their 2-1 lead as the newest member of the Dinos notched his first CIS goal. Kevin King's initial shot was denied by Andrew Hayes, but on the rebound, King was able to bat the puck out of the air and over Hayes to regain the advantage for his club.

Hayes played a big role in keeping his team in the game during the second period. The first-year goaltender stopped 11 shots in the stanza, including a huge save on a breakaway on Calgary team captain Reid Jorgensen.

The Dinos appeared to have pulled in front by two during the third period when Dylan Hood got the puck past Hayes. The referee was quick to wave off the tally, however, ruling the Regina goaltender was bumped on the play.

The third period saw Calgary continue to restrain the Regina offence. After picking up five shots in the first period, the totals slowly dwindled from four, to only two in the third. Following a time out, the Cougars pulled the goaltender with just over a minute remaining. Despite holding Calgary in their own zone, Regina was unable to get the puck on net as the Dinos held on for the 2-1 decision.

The Dinos outshot the Cougars 33-12. Calgary was 0-for-3 on the power play, while Regina went 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

These two teams will meet up again Saturday night as they play the second game of this two-game set at the Father David Bauer Arena. Puck drop goes at 7 p.m. MT.
