BOX SCORE
CALGARY – The Saskatchewan Huskies used a 14-point scoring advantage in the second quarter to run past the Calgary Dinos 80-72 Saturday night, sweeping their weekend series in the Jack Simpson Gym.
Trailing 20-17 after the first quarter, an eight-point outburst by the Huskies' Kabree Howard and a solid defensive performance gave Saskatchewan a 23-9 advantage in the second 10 minutes, holding Calgary to just four field goals on 13 attempts and turning the ball over seven times.
Facing an 11-point deficit at halftime, the Dinos came back strong to win the second half 43-40, but the second quarter proved pivotal as the Huskies improved to 7-4 on the season, moving ahead of the Dinos in the playoff race by dropping Calgary to 7-5.
While it was Howard that dominated the second quarter with eight of her 13 points on the night, fifth-year guard Katie Miyazaki poured it on in the second half for the defending national finalist Huskies, recording a big-time 25-point, 16-rebound stat line and finishing just two assists shy of a triple-double on the night. Miyazaki, who played 38 minutes on the night for the Huskies, did most of her damage after the break, scoring 15 and rebounding 10 in a second half where she didn't once leave the floor.
Freshman Dalyce Emmerson also had a double-double night for the Huskies, scoring 13 and adding 11 rebounds – seven of which were of the offensive variety.
Fifth-year point guard
Jenna Kaye got on the double-double wagon for the Calgary Dinos, leading her team with 12 rebounds to go with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Jessica Franz held the scoring lead for Calgary with 17, while
Tamara Jarrett and
Megan Lang contributed a dozen points apiece.
For the second night in a row, the Huskies got significant scoring from their bench, outscoring the Dinos 23-9 in that department after picking up 34 bench points in Friday night's 79-72 win. Calgary held the edge in field goal percentage at 45.5 against 42, while neither team shot particularly well from the line: the Dinos made six of only nine opportunities (66.7%), while Saskatchewan shot just 59 per cent, going 13-for-22.
Saskatchewan returns home to face the Thompson Rivers WolfPack and UBC Okanagan Heat next weekend at the PAC in Saskatoon, while the Dinos will look to get back into the win column as they head south to face the Pronghorns (2-10) in Lethbridge. Tip-off goes at 6 p.m. Jan. 20-21, with the games broadcast live on CanadaWest.tv.
Calgary returns home Jan. 27-28 to face the Alberta Pandas. The Dinos host the 2012 CIS Women's Basketball Final 8 March 17-19 in the Jack Simpson Gym.
