BOX SCORE CALGARY – The Victoria Vikes put on an offensive show Sunday afternoon, using a strong southerly wind to their advantage to hand the 10th-ranked University of Calgary Dinos a 3-0 defeat – their first home loss since Oct. 31, 2009.
BOX SCORE
The first of the Vikes' three goals in the contest came in the 15th minute when Kyle Kostis sent a cross to a streaking Miguel Romeo, who tapped it past Dinos keeper
Colin Hasick. Possesion was fairly even between the two squads in the first half and the Dinos managed to have a number of close scoring opportunities themselves, with shots by
Jason Genee and
Ben Cole that both just sailed above the crossbar.
The second half of the contest was all Vikes with four shots on goal in the half, compared to just one by Calgary. The Vikes had a great attempt in the beginning of the second half when Cam Hundal headed a shot just wide of the goal. Shortly thereafter the Dinos also had a great scoring opportunity with a
Jeremy Jenkyns boot from well outside the penalty area that caught the Vikes off-guard, got held up in the wind, and bounced off the crossbar.
Victoria added some insurance in the 57th minute when Jordie Oberg scored on a rocket to the top right corner of the net. Calgary had a chance to draw within one midway through the frame when
Lane Forsyth sent a header sailing over the net, and the Vikes put it away moments later. Craig Taylor picked off the ball from a Dinos defender with a nice tackle, then dribbled around a couple more Dinos before chipping a low shot off the right post behind Hasick in the 79th minute.
Elliot Mitrou turned aside all four shots sent his way to record the shutout for Victoria, while Hasick suffered his first loss of the season despite a six-save performance in the Calgary goal.
The loss drops Calgary to 4-2 on the season, but they remain alone in first place with 12 points thanks to the out-of-town scoreboard. Victoria improves to 3-2-1 with the victory.
Both teams head back to the coast for their next action in a week's time. The Vikes embark on a home-and-home series with the Fraser Valley Cascades, while Calgary will visit Trinity Western and UBC in a pair of key matches in the B.C. Lower Mainland.
