Late Cole goal lifts Dinos over Cascades

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY - Heroics in the final minutes by midfielder Ben Cole proved to be the difference as the No. 10-ranked University of Calgary Dinos trumped the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades 1-0 Saturday afternoon at West Varsity Soccer Pitch.

BOX SCORE

After Fraser Valley carried the play for much of the contest, Calgary began to get some scoring chances late in the game and capitalized with just under three minutes to go. During a scramble in the box following a corner kick, Cole took a feed from Ilya Zelinskiy and bounced it past UFV 'keeper Mark Village for what stood up as the game-winner.

The opening half saw a fast paced action with each team going back and forth trying to set the tone.

The first serious scoring chance didn't occur until the 31st minute when UFV's Craig Robertson was denied by Jordan Unreiner who raced out to challenge the shot. Robertson ended up losing handle of the ball as it was swallowed up by the Calgary goalkeeper.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net though the first 45 minutes as they went into the half in a scoreless tie.

Unreiner made a huge save early in the second half to keep the game 0-0. Cascades forward Sasa Plavsic broke in from the right side where he curved a shot at the left corner of the net. Unreiner was able to jump up and get a piece of the ball for the acrobatic save.

Plavsic and Unreiner went head-to-head again later in the half during a battle in front of the Dinos net. With a crowd swarming, Plavsic tried to find an open hole to bury a shot. Once again though, Unreiner was in the right place at the right time to take control and end the threat, setting the stage for Cole's late-game heroics.

Calgary's record now sits at 4-1-0, while Fraser Valley falls to 1-4-0.

The Dinos take the field again tomorrow afternoon as they play the University of Victoria Vikes at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch. UFV now travels to Lethbridge where they will take on the Pronghorns.
