CALGARY – Pity
Tamara Jarrett. On most nights, her 24-point effort would have been good enough for player-of-the-game honours – but Jarrett shares the court with one
Ashley Hill, and the Calgary Dinos' lone fifth-year senior was on a mission Friday night. She scored a career-best 38 points en route to a 93-79 win over the Manitoba Bisons in the Jack Simpson Gym.
BOX SCORE
It was the fifth-best single-game performance in school history for Hill, who has the three top individual performances in the conference this season. On the two previous occasions she potted 34.
More importantly for the Dinos, however, they got a badly needed victory and put a little more breathing room between themselves and the Manitoba Bisons. Calgary improves to 9-10 on the year thanks to a fifth straight victory, while Manitoba's playoff hopes are all but extinguished with a 6-13 record.
Solid shooting across the board led the way for the Dinos, who shot nearly 57 percent from the field, but it was the tandem of Hill and Jarrett that took 30 of Calgary's 51 shots and scored 62 of the Dinos' 93 points – a one-two punch that Manitoba simply couldn't stop.
While Calgary's scoring was concentrated around those two, the Bisons responded with five players in double digits, led by Mubo Ilelaboye's 19-point effort. But none of it could bring Manitoba within striking distance of Hill. She was routinely left alone for wide-open jumpers, doing most of her damage in the odd quarters with 12 in the first and 16 in the third. Both 10-minute periods saw the Dinos with large scoring leads, 26-17 in the opening 10 minutes and 22-15 after recess.
Calgary led by 14 – the Dinos' ultimate margin of victory – after three quarters, but the game turned into a track meet in the fourth as the teams went shot-for-shot, finishing with matching 26-point efforts. The fourth quarter is where Jarrett did much of her damage with eight points after putting up 11 in the second – the yang to Hill's yin.
The Dinos did, however, turn the ball over far too much in the second half, handing the rock to the Bisons 21 times in the final 20 minutes to finish with 35. The Bisons made use of their opportunities, collecting 31 points off those freebies.
Kayla Klassen's 13-point night followed up Ilelaboye's team-high for Manitoba, while Lauren Mortier added 12, Asia Rhines Malone 11, and Vanessa De Vries 10.
Calgary suffered a loss in the fourth quarter when fourth-year guard
Megan Lang was involved in a collision under the hoop and suffered an apparent right ankle injury. She did not return in the contest after 23 minutes on the floor.
The two teams renew acquaintances Saturday night in the rematch, with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. MT.
