Calgary cleaned up in the Canada West Major Awards, with seven of the 14 awards going to different Dinos. #Amonn Nelson and Sam Effah# each took home two awards each, winning the Outstanding Track Performer and Outstanding Track Performance titles.
Both commented about their weekend. “I exceeded my expectations for the whole weekend and really pleased and blessed with my results over the two days,” commented Nelson. Effah added, “Overall, I wanted to break a conference record and continue moving forwards to the Nationals with a strong weekend. I am genuinely happy with my 60m results.”
Rachel Machin took Canada West Female Rookie of Year honours, while Robyn Webster took the Female Student-Athlete and Community Award.
Nelson followed up her record breaking performance on Friday in the 300m with another conference record on Saturday, once again edging out former Dinos Esmie Lawrence with a time of 7.51 in the 60m event. Nelson took home four gold medals in all, winning in the 4x200m and 4x400m events.
Along with Nelson record medal haul, Dinos Madeline MacDonald was first in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:34.95 while Machin was first in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.77m.
He was disappointed yesterday without a Canada West record but on Saturday he knocked off his old record in the men's 60m dash. Calgary's fifth year Effah ran a thrilling 6.59m time and beat his mark set in 2009 with a 6.64. Effah took home two gold medals in all, in the 60m as well as the 300m.
Head Coach Doug Lamont took Female Coach of the Year honours, and commented on the great day in Winnipeg.
"Overall just a great team performance for the women, they scored points in every event, and we had great performances from Madeline and Rachel, as well as Amonn obviously" said Lamont.
"On the men's side, we just came up a little short, Regina had a great day and we did the best we could. Everyone contributed and overall it was a great day for Dinos Track and Field."
The Dinos won their fifth championship title in the last seven years as they won a tight race with provincial rival Alberta. Calgary was first with 113.5 while Alberta was second with 102.5. The defending champion Saskatchewan Huskies were third with 65. On the men's side, the defending champion Regina Cougars won back-to-back team championship titles by posting 106 points and 27 points ahead of second place Calgary (79). In third was Alberta with 76 points.
Other Canada West gold medal championship women's performances included Lethbridge's Heather Steacy who set a new Canada West record in the women's weight throw with a toss of 19.89m (bettering the old conference record of Lethbridge's Kate Forbes with 19.02 in 2005), Alberta's and National team member Carline Muir in the 600m (1:31.95) and Alberta's Courtney Wilkes in the triple jump (11.89m)
Aside from Effah, more conference championship record went down on the men's side. Saskatchewan's Taylor Petrucha made it a 1-2-3 sweep on the podium in men's pole vault when he won his fifth conference title ('06-'08, '10-11) in the discipline. Petrucha also increased his own conference record by .01 with a jump of 5.22m. Plus, Andrew Smith of Saskatchewan destroyed the men's shot put record with a throw of 18.71m (old conference record was Chris Meisner of Lethbridge in 2004)
Alberta's Jaden Ostapowich earned his second gold medal of this championship in the men's 600m in a time of 1:19.13. More Canada West gold medal championship men's performances highlighted Victoria's Karl Robertson in first in the men's 1500m in a time of 3:55.25; Regina's Jeremy Eckert just missed a conference record mark on his last attempt and won with a 2.11m leap. Regina's David Walford won in men's triple jump (13.94m) while Regina won the men's 4x200m relay and Victoria was first in the men's 4x400m relay.
