CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos got down early and could not recover as the no.1 Saskatchewan Huskies rolled at the Jack Simpson Gym, winning by a score of 83-55.
BOX SCORE
Katie Miyazaki was three assists away from a triple-double, leading the Huskies with 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in an all-world effort. Miyazaki was perfect from the charity stripe and was one of a group of five Saskatchewan scorers in double digits. Kim Tulloch was the next highest scorer with 15.
Calgary had only two scorers in double digits, as Megan Schaufele and Tamara Jarrett each posted 10 points. Schaufele had eight rebounds as well from her guard position, leading the team by three boards.
Ashley Hill had only eight points in a three for 13 effort from the field and will have a tough time meeting her goal for second all-time on the Dinos scoring list in the last regular season game of her career. Hill needs to score 35 points tomorrow night to take sole possession of the record, which is a total she is not immune to, posting several 30-plus point efforts this season.
The Huskies were ten percent better from the field than the home-side, had more rebounds, more three-point shots and seven less turnovers in a complete game effort, showing off why they are ranked first in the country. Saskatchewan hoisted 27 three point attempts, hitting on only seven of them.
The Dinos struggled from the free-throw line as well on Friday night, hitting just over 50% of their shots. Calgary often seemed flustered with a very strong defensive effort from Saskatchewan (21-2), who simply forced Calgary into many bad shots.
The two teams combined for 43 personal fouls in a remarkably physical four quarters of basketball. Two Huskies fouled out of the game on Friday, with two others stuck with four by games' end, while Calgary's Jarrett fouled out with Alex Cole only one foul away from a similar fate.
Calgary (10-13) does have a playoff spot in hand, albeit the last one available, and have a trip to Saskatchewan, Winnipeg or Regina to look forward to next weekend, depending on the result of tomorrow night's rematch against the Huskies.
The Dinos and Huskies will finish the weekend series and the regular season tomorrow night at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium, where Calgary will formerly bid adieu to Hill, one of the best scorers to lace up the sneakers for the Red and White.
