EDMONTON - Sophomore guard Jordan Baker notched a double-double as the University of Alberta Golden Bears basketball team defeated the Calgary Dinos 78-68 Saturday night in the U of A's Main Gym.
BOX SCORE
Baker, the 2010 Canada West rookie of the year, notched 23 points and game-high 12 rebounds, while fourth year shooting guard Daniel Ferguson banked 27 points. The win gives Alberta a 16-8 record, which is good enough for fifth place in the conference. The Bears trail Victoria for fourth place, and the final home playoff position.
A pair of Dinos scored 14 points, as
Keenan Milburn and fourth-year
Tyler Fidler led Calgary in scoring.
Matt Letkeman and
Youri Anissovets each added 12 points as the Dinos dropped to an 8-14 record. Calgary is currently tied with UFV for the final playoff position in Canada West, and they will face the defending CIS champion Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend to close out their regular season. The Cascades will face-off against the 4-14 Brandon Bobcats in their final regular season games.
Calgary opened the game strong, picking up a 7-2 lead, before eventually giving way to the Bears, and trailing by five after 10 minutes.
Undeterred, the Dinos continued to press, using a 2-3 zone defence to stymie Alberta and create turnovers. They outscored the Bears by two points in the second quarter, but still trailed 37-34 at half.
Alberta came out hard in the third quarter, putting away 25 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and racing out to a 62-52 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Dinos kept it competitive in the final frame, but couldn't overcome Alberta's lead, as the Golden Bears hung onto their 10 point lead to win 78-68.
Alberta now needs Victoria to lose both of their final regular season games next weekend against UBC in order to clinch a home playoff date.
The Dinos are in the final playoff position, but haven't clinched a spot yet. The Manitoba Bisons sit one place ahead with a 9-13 record, while the UFV Cascades are tied with Calgary at 8-14. Also in the mix are the 6-16 Lethbridge Pronghorns.
The Dinos wrap up the regular season with a pair of games at home against Saskatchewan, with tip-off at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights in the Jack Simpson Gym.
