CALGARY – A resilient effort by the University of Calgary Dinos, helped out by a 24-point fourth quarter, carried them to a 69-64 win over the University of Victoria Vikes at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium on Friday night.
Calgary ends their mini two-game losing streak with the win, moving to 5-2. Victoria drops to 4-3 on the campaign as their three-game winning streak in snapped.
Victoria held the lead for the majority of the match, but a determined Calgary squad kept the score close throughout the game.
The largest deficit the Dinos faced was six points, which they came back from in both the second and third quarters. Calgary grabbed their first lead of the match in the final two minutes of the third quarter and would go back and forth with Victoria for the remainder of contest.
After trading points through most of the fourth quarter, Calgary was finally able to establish a sizable lead with the help of solid play down low by their guards. Jessica Kaye rounded out the scoring late as she netted four key points on free throws securing the victory for the home team.
Kaye and
Tamara Jarrett lead the way for Calgary in the points department as they each scored 19 points on the evening, while
Alex Cole and
Megan Lang chipped in 10 points apiece. Virtually all of Calgary's scoring came from the starting five – one three-ball by Aussie
Ashley Hirons was the entirety of the bench scoring for Calgary
Jessica Renfrew and Cassandra Goodis were Victoria's top producers as they both collected 16 points. Goodis played the most of any player on the night as she saw action for 39 minutes.
Clutch three-point shooting by the Dinos made the huge difference in the second half. Every time it appeared Victoria was about to pull away, a Calgary player drained a three-pointer to bring the score closer. The Dinos ended the night going 26.1 per cent from three-point land, while the Vikes went 16.7.
The Dinos return to action tomorrow evening as they host the UBC Thunderbirds at 6 p.m. in the Jack Simpson Gym. The Vikes travel to Lethbridge where they will take on the Pronghorns tomorrow night.
