CALGARY – An injury-riddled University of Calgary Dinos squad battled hard all game, but were unable to overcome the No. 6-ranked University of Victoria Vikes as they fell 75-63 on Friday night at the Jack Simpson Gym.

The Dinos stormed out to an advantage to start the game, only to see the Vikes take control in the second quarter, carrying that momentum through the remainder of the match thanks in large part to a significant advantage on the glass.

Fifth-year guard Ryan MacKinnon led the scoring in the game as he notched 15 points for Victoria. Zac Andrus added a dozen, as did Terrell Evans. Calgary's top producer was Tyler Fidler with scored 22 points, while Andrew McGuinness chipped in 15 and Josh Wolfram 12.

Calgary was 41.7 per cent on field goals, while Victoria was 38.0. Despite the lower shooting percentage, the Vikes were able to launch 23 more shots than the Dinos.

The Dinos were able to jump out to an early first quarter lead off the support of some three-point shooting. Two of Calgary's three baskets from three-point range came from Andrew McGuinness as he helped establish became an eight-point advantage for the home team. Victoria pushed back late in the quarter to make it a 21-17 game in favor of Calgary.

It was a completely different story late in the second quarter. With just over five minutes until half time and the Dinos up 24-22, the Vikes went on a miraculous scoring run, outscoring Calgary 17-0 to take a 41-28 lead into the half. The Dinos were held to only seven points in the quarter.

An area where the Vikes were able to dominate was in rebounds. Victoria was able to beat Calgary to the ball in both the offensive and defensive ends as they out-rebounded their opponent 47-27, including a whopping 22 offensive rebounds for the Vikes against just five off the O-glass for the Dinos.

Despite solid play through the second half, the Dinos were unable to come back from a defecating second quarter which ended up defining the game. The Vikes outscored the Dinos 46-35 in the back half.

Calgary returns to action Saturday evening as they host the UBC Thunderbirds at 8 p.m. at the Jack Simpson Gym while the Vikes travel to Lethbridge where they will take on the Pronghorns, who handed UBC its first loss of the season by a 90-80 score Friday.
