Dinos follow up 8-1 drubbing with 3-2 squeaker

| By:
CALGARY – The Calgary Dinos were able to complete the series sweep of the visiting Regina Cougars with a 3-2 win Saturday night in Canada West women's hockey action at Father David Bauer Arena.

BOX SCORE

The Dinos outshot the Cougars an impressive 40-13 in the matchup along with maintaining possession of the puck for much of the game.

A penalty-filled first period lead to multiple scoring opportunities for the Dinos, with the home side enjoying six power play opportunities in the frame. Calgary began scoring at 14:26 with a power play goal by Sinead Tracey, her third of the year. Erika Mitschke and Melissa Zubick assisted her on the score.

The visiting Cougars first lit the lamp at 17:34 when fourth-year forward Paige Wheeler was able to get the puck past Dinos goalie Jennifer Mallard, who made her second start of the season.

After the first period of play shots on goal were 13-3 in favor of the Dinos, but the score was tied at 1-1.

The Cougars kicked off scoring in the second period when a blazing shot from Wight got lost in Mallard's upper padding. The puck managed to fall down past the goal line to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

The Dinos evened things up at 19:07 of the second period when a beautiful pass from forward Melissa Zubick connected to a streaking Iya Gavrilova. Gavrilova's shot was on the mark as she pushed the puck past the sprawling Regina goalie Jennifer Schmidt. The goal was Gavrilova's seventh of the year.

Elana Lovell, who scored four goals and six points in Friday's 8-1 Calgary win over Regina, added to her point total when she snatched up a rebound left by Schmidt, and beat her bottom left corner. The goal, Lovell's 14th point of the year, came at 2:55 of the third and stood up as the game-winner.

The Cougars tried late to mount some sort of offensive attack but it was to no avail as the Dinos picked up their seventh win of the season moving to 7-1-0, while the Cougars fall to 3-5-0.

Rookie goalie Schmidt did an excellent job of keeping the Cougars in the game, fanning away 37 of the 40 pucks she faced on the night. Dinos goalie Jennifer Mallard stopped nine of 11 shots against her in her two periods of play, while Amanda Tapp was brought in for the third period of play and shut the door on the Cougars, stopping all three shots she faced.

The Dinos will be hitting the road next weekend for a series against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, while the Cougars will play host to the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
