CALGARY – Elana Lovell scored four goals and added two assists as the fourth-ranked Calgary Dinos put up their second eight spot in three games in an 8-1 win over the Regina Cougars Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.
BOX SCORE
Lovell notched her fifth of the season, unassisted, just 3:18 into the contest to spark the Dinos, who improve to 6-1-0 on the season after playing their third game without head coach
Danielle Goyette and star
Hayley Wickenheiser, both of whom are representing Canada at the Four Nations Cup in Sweden. A fourth-year forward out of Kamloops, B.C., Lovell added three more in the game to give her the Canada West lead in goals (8) and points (13).
A 2-0 lead for the Dinos in the first intermission exploded into a five-goal second period for Calgary that chased Regina starter Lisa Urban for the third period. Urban gave up seven goals on 22 shots before giving way to Jennifer Schmidt in the third period.
Sinead Tracey, Stephanie Ramsey, and
Iya Gavrilova also had multiple-point nights for the Dinos with a goal and an assist each, while
Calaine Inglis added her second goal of the season midway through the second period.
Paige Wheeler finally got the Cougars on the scoreboard with just over five minutes remaining in the third period on an unassisted, shorthanded tally as she went in and beat Calgary netminder
Amanda Tapp to cut Calgary's lead to 7-1. Just over a minute later, however, Lovell wrapped up the scoring with her fourth of the night and eighth of the season.
The Cougars actually out-shot the Dinos 37-33 in the contest, with Tapp solid between the pipes making 36 saves in the win. Both teams had eight opportunities on the power play, and while the Dinos were successful on two of their chances, the Cougars couldn't muster any offence with the man advantage.
Regina falls to 3-4 with the loss. The two teams hook up once more Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena, with puck drop at 7 p.m.
