Tapp notches shutout as Dinos sweep Pandas

| By:

EDMONTON - The No.4 Alberta Pandas and No.6 Calgary Dinos continued the puck paucity in the second game of their home-and-home series, the Dinos scoring the only goal late in the third to earn the victory and the weekend series sweep, Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.

BOX SCORE

Sophomore Dino Iya Gavrilova, born in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, notched the game-winner with only 3:02 left to go in the game while third-year goaltender Amanda Tapp made 18 saves for her first shutout of the season

Third-year goaltender Michala Jeffries stopped 21 of 22 shots in the loss, improving her weekend save total to 56 out of 59.

Scoring chances were at a premium on Saturday evening, with the visitors getting the best chance of the opening frame when Jenna Smith rang a shot off the crossbar with five minutes left to go.

Alberta had 1:28 of a five-on-three advantage early in the second period, but could not find a good scoring opportunity, managing only one shot on goal.

Fortunately for the home team, Jeffries, who made 35 saves in the low-scoring 2-1 overtime affair in Calgary the night before, was able to hold back the Dinos' on their own five-on-three power-play four minutes later, stopping all five shots and keeping the game scoreless.

The two teams then plugged up the neutral zone for the rest of the game until Gavrilova broke in on a partial breakaway towards the Alberta goal, sifting a backhand deke through Jeffries' five-hole for the one-goal lead.

A Pandas' comeback got stymied late in the game when senior defender Nicole Pratt took a slashing penalty.

The two teams combined for zero goals on 12 power-play attempts, Alberta coming up short on five attempts while Calgary couldn't tally a man-advantage marker in seven.

The 2-1-1 Pandas head east next weekend to duel with the 2-2 Saskatchewan Huskies in a two-game series while the 2-0 Dinos take on another home-and-home series with the Lethbridge Pronghorns, starting in Lethbridge on Friday.
