Dinos escape with OT win in penalty-filled contest

| By:
CALGARY – Hayley Wickenheiser's first goal of the season at 1:29 of overtime lifted the University of Calgary Dinos to a 2-1 victory over the Alberta Pandas Friday night in Calgary's first action of the 2011-12 Canada West season.

BOX SCORE

Wickenheiser's snap shot from the high slot on the power play beat Alberta goalie Michala Jeffries up high to give the Dinos the win after they outshot the Pandas 37-14 on the night.

The Dinos thought they had the winning goal with only 35 seconds passed in OT, on a hard shot by Wickenheiser that went top corner past Jeffries but that goal was waved off as one of the Dinos players was deemed to be in the Pandas crease. Just 53 seconds after the disallowed goal, however,  the Dinos finally claimed victory on Wickenheiser's bullet to virtually the same location as the disallowed tally.

It was a parade to the penalty box for both squads during this match, with the two teams combining for 82 penalty minutes on the night and no fewer than 32 minor penalties in total. Neither team could capitalize on the numerous power play opportunities in the game with the Dinos going 1-12, and the Pandas going 1-15 on the power play.

In her first game with the Dinos since transferring from the University of Alberta, former Panda Stephanie Ramsay opened the scoring 8:17 into the game on a shorthanded goal. Ramsey capitalized on a Wickenheiser rebound and managed to sneak the puck past Jeffries. Ramsay had a wonderful showing against her former team with this goal and an assist on Wickenheiser's winning goal, along with leading all players with shots on goal with eight – five of which came in the third period.

The second period was all Dinos, as Calgary managed to apply great pressure and outshot the Pandas an astounding 11-2, but could not manage to get any past Jeffries, who was named the game's first star after stopping 35 of the 27 shots sent her way by the Dinos.

The equalizer for the Pandas came 6:14 into the third period. With the Pandas holding a five-on-three advantage, some chaos in front of the Dinos net lead to a wrist shot by Janelle Malcolm that managed to sneak past third-year Dinos goalie Amanda Tapp. The Dinos applied heavy pressure at the end of the third, with some great scoring chances from Wickenheiser and Ramsay, and ended up outshooting the Pandas again 15-4 in the third frame.

The Dinos move to 1-0-0 on the year while the Pandas slip to 2-0-1. The two teams face off again Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton to close out their home-and-home series, with puck drop at 7 p.m.
