Dinos reboot after bye week to face Bears

| By:
CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos take on the annual hockey power house, the University of Alberta Golden Bears, this weekend in a home-and-home set.

The Dinos begin Friday in Edmonton at Clare Drake Arena on Friday night and wrap up the next day back home at Father David Bauer Arena.

Coming off a break that hasn't seen them play in nearly two weeks, Calgary will look to improve on their 1-3-0 record and break a streak that has seen them get shutout in both of their home games this season. The Golden Bears enter the weekend with a record of 2-1-1 after losing back-to-back games versus Manitoba.
This is the first time since the preseason that these two rivals will meet. Alberta took both of those matches by the scores of 6-2 and 3-2 (OT). The Golden Bears also defeated the Dinos last season to capture their 49th Canada West men's hockey championship.

Calgary last two games came against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver where they were able to pick up their first win of the season while splitting the set. In those two games came the emergence of several of the Dinos new recruits from the summer. Defenceman Teigan Zahn, who comes to Calgary after playing five seasons with the Saskatoon Blades, had six assists in those two games against UBC including a four assist effort on Oct. 7. Former Nashville Predators draft pick Taylor Stefishen also played well in Vancouver as he scored two games in each game against the Thunderbirds. Each of Calgary's top four point producers so far this year are freshmen.

Sean Ringrose has led the Golden Bears so far this campaign with five points in four games. In his first two years at Alberta, Ringrose had a total of 55 points in 56 games. During the offseason, The Golden Beats lost three of their top-four scorers from the previous year. Derek Ryan went overseas to play in Austria, while both Eric Hunter and Chad Klassen are playing in North America. Hunter signed with Lake Erie in the AHL after a short stint with them at the end of last year. Klassen ended the 2010-11 season by joining the Victoria Salmon Kings in the ECHL. After a successful playoff-run, Klassen signed on to play for the Idaho Steelheads this year. With all the scoring lost this off-season, Alberta will now look to new comers like Levko Koper and Jordan Hickmott to try and fill the void.

A side story this weekend might be which goaltenders get a share of the crease for the Dinos. So far this year, Dustin Butler has seen the opener of both two-game sets, while the back-up has seen the second match. On opening weekend it was Kris Lazaruk that got to play against the Bisons in a 2-0 loss. On Oct. 8 Jacob Deserres had the chance to make his CIS debut, but was pulled after two periods allowing four goals on 16 shots.

Real Cyr and Kurtis Mucha have each seen two games between the pipes for Alberta. Both goaltenders have one win each so far on the campaign.

Next weekend, Calgary will play the University of Lethbridge on Oct. 28-29. The Dinos will host the first game before traveling to Lethbridge to finish the two-game set the next night.

Alberta will play two games at home next weekend as they host the Saskatchewan Huskies on Oct. 28-29.
