BOX SCORE CALGARY – In a pivotal meeting with serious playoff implications, the University of Calgary Dinos and University of Saskatchewan Huskies battled to a 1-1 draw at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch Sunday afternoon.
BOX SCORE
Coming off a 3-0 loss to the rival Alberta Pandas, the Dinos looked to get back in the win column and split their two-game home set. Saskatchewan entered the game sitting in fourth place in the Canada West standings, two points ahead of Calgary with four games remaining for each team this season. The top four teams make the post-season tournament.
Sarah Benson opened the scoring early with a goal 11 minutes in. Off a turnover in the Huskies end, Benson scooped up the ball and beat out the remaining Saskatchewan defender before notching her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
After a first half that saw the Dinos control the majority of the play, the Huskies came out hard after the break. A shot by Brooklyn Leier hit the cross bar, but as the play continued Gillian Pinder finished off the play to tie the game 1-1 at the 48th minute.
The game looked headed for a dramatic finish when Saskatchewan was called for a handball in the box giving Calgary a penalty shot in stoppage time. With the game on her foot,
Tessa Miller rung the penalty shot attempt off the right post in the final scoring chance of the match, and the final whistle blew seconds thereafter.
Despite a balanced second half, Calgary outshot Saskatchewan 20 to 11. The Dinos also held the advantage in corner kicks with 10 while the Huskies didn't have a single opportunity.
The tie dropped Saskatchewan (5-3-2) out of the playoff picture for the time being, with Victoria leapfrogging the Huskies into fourth place with a 1-0 win over Regina Sunday afternoon. Calgary (4-3-3) sits sixth with 15 points, two back of Saskatchewan and three in arrears of Victoria.
Calgary's next game will see them hit the road to take on the University of Manitoba Bisons on Oct. 22 and finish off the road portion of their schedule on Oct. 23 against the University of Regina Cougars.
The Huskies travel to British Columbia for match-ups against TWU and UBC next weekend.
