BOX SCORE CALGARY – Fifth-year striker Brett Colvin made a little history in his hometown Saturday, becoming the University of Alberta's all-time leading scorer with a late goal in the Golden Bears' 2-0 shutout victory over the Calgary Dinos Saturday afternoon.
BOX SCORE
Colvin, a graduate of Calgary's Lord Beaverbrook High School, assisted on Milan Timotijevic's first half goal, then scored one of his own in the 67th minute. It was the 24th career conference goal for the former All-Canadian, passing David Phillips' (1986-90) five-year total of 23.
The 2-0 victory vaulted the Bears over an uninspired Dinos team in the standings as the playoff race heats up with six teams still in the hunt for just four playoff spots. With 13 points, Calgary (4-4-1) sits in sixth place in the Canada West standings but is just two points out of third with five games remaining in the season. One of the teams they trail is the Saskatchewan Huskies, who just happen to be their next opponent.
On this day, however, the Golden Bears carried the play and had the majority of the chances, outshooting the Dinos 15-5 in a match-up that featured a total of four yellow cards. Calgary was able to muster four of its five shots in the first half, but the momentum switched decisively when Colvin feathered a nifty pass to Timotijevic inside the area, one which the fifth-year striker – also playing in his hometown – one-timed a shot to the bottom corner out of the reach of Dinos netminder
Jordan Unreiner.
From there, the Golden Bears took control, outshooting the Dinos 9-1 in the second frame and racking up a total of 10 corner kicks to Calgary's three.
Unreiner was busy in the Calgary goal, making 12 saves on the day, while Jay Vetsch was forced to make just four stops for Alberta.
Calgary hosts Saskatchewan (4-3-2) in a pivotal match-up Sunday afternoon at the West Varsity Pitch, while the Alberta Golden Bears wrap up their swing through Southern Alberta with a trip to Lethbridge to face the Pronghorns. Kickoff for both games is slated for 2:15 p.m.
