Dinos pull within two points of Pandas

| By:
CALGARY – Goals in the final 10 minutes of each half proved to be enough for the Calgary Dinos as they dispatched the Alberta Pandas 2-0 in Canada West field hockey action Saturday afternoon at the University of Calgary's Hawkings Field.

Courtney Campbell scored her fourth of the season on a penalty corner in the 26th minute, while Kaitlin Longworth netted her fifth in the 61st minute to buy the Dinos a little insurance. Stephanie Petrowitsch picked up her first shutout of the season for Calgary.

The Dinos improve to 3-3-3 on the season, pulling within two points of the Pandas (4-3-2) for second spot with three games remaining in the regular season – the first of which comes in the rematch Sunday afternoon, when a Calgary win would vault the Dinos into second place.

It was a penalty-filled affair, with two green cards and four yellows distributed by the umpires. Both greens and three of the yellows were charged to the home side.

“I was pleased with our performance, absolutely,” said Calgary head coach Jenn Swagar. “Our goal today was that every 50-50 ball would be ours, and I don't think they even got a shot off in the second half. Getting the cards was unfortunate and we need to clean that up tomorrow, but I like that everybody played tough.

“We still could have had more finish on our short corners, but we did get that one goal on a rebound.”

That goal was Campbell's, which came off a corner situation on a set play where she and Carolina Romeo crashed to the goal. A rebound landed on Campbell's stick, and she fed it past Alberta 'keeper Tory Spencer to give Calgary the lead.

Longworth's insurance marker in the second half came after the Dinos carried the majority of the play and tilted the field heavily toward Spencer's goal. Longworth got the ball right in the slot and directed it in the right corner of the net with less than 10 minutes to play.

Calgary (as host) and conference-leading UBC have already qualified to attend the national tournament, with one Canada West spot still up for grabs. Either the Pandas or the Victoria Vikes will get it, but it's a long road ahead for the Vikes. They trail Alberta by eight points with just three games to play. Essentially, Victoria must win out and hope that the Pandas drop all three of their remaining games to qualify for the CIS meet.

The Dinos host the 2011 CIS-FHC Field Hockey Championship Nov. 3-6.
