Forsyth's late tally salvages draw with TWU

| By:
BOX SCORE LANGLEY, B.C. – The Calgary Dinos' Lane Forsyth scored in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw with the Trinity Western Spartans at Rogers Park Friday night.

BOX SCORE

The Spartans were just over a minute from taking three points from the Canada West leading Dinos as they held onto a late one goal lead, thanks to an in close strike from Spencer Schmidt in the 78th minute, but Forsyth snuffed out TWU's hope for a win as he buried a loose ball in the box following an Ilya Zelinskiy corner kick.

The tie moves Trinity Western's regular season record to 3-2-1 while Calgary now has a record of 4-2-1. A Spartans win would have vaulted Trinity Western into first place in Canada West but instead TWU remains two points behind the Dinos.

While the final result showed a 1-1 score line, it was largely a Spartans controlled match as they had 16 shots compared to Calgary's seven and had 10 corners to the Dinos two. But in the end, the Spartans had to accept a bitter result.

The Spartans started the game all over the Dinos but it was Calgary getting the first close call when Izak Lawrence, in the 26th minute whipped a low shot that scraped the outside of the left post.

Trinity Western's best chance of the first half came just six minutes later when, after a Calgary miscue at the top of its own box created a loose ball, the Spartans Mitchell Rohla stepped into a shot just inside the middle of box and Calgary goalie Jordan Unreiner made the save of the night on a diving stop to his right that thwarted what looked like a sure goal.

After that, the Spartans kept pressuring but were unable to beat Unreiner on four shots on net. Calgary didn't register a single shot on goal in the first half.

In the second half, with the game still scoreless, Calgary came on with a little more energy but the Spartans still maintained the majority of possession and chances.

Schmidt broke through with the game's first goal with just over 12 minutes to play when he raced into the box and volleyed home a Brayden Volkenant cross from the right side, beating a defenseless Unreiner to his right.

From there, the Spartans continued to wear down the Dinos and never really gave Calgary anything in the form of quality offensive opportunities.

That was, until the 92nd minute when Calgary's Zelinskiy fired a corner into the mixer and Forsyth was the first to find the ball on a goalmouth scramble and he made no mistake on his opportunity.

The Spartans pushed a late go-ahead goal and managed to earn two more corner kicks after but ultimately were unable to get a shot on net.

Unreiner finished with five saves on the night while Spartans goalie Andrew Fink had four saves.

Calgary will now travel to UBC to play the Thunderbirds Saturday at 8:15 p.m. MT.

Game Notes: Calgary's Jeremy Jenkyns (34') and Yoann Promonet (86') each were shown yellow cards while Trinity Western's Jordan Whitehead (90') also saw yellow…The Spartans had six shots on target and Calgary had five.
